⚡ Quick Answer — Nidhi Shrimali
To make a janam kundli for a new born baby, you need three things: the exact birth time from the hospital record, the date, and the town or city of birth. Enter them in any Vedic kundli generator using Lahiri ayanamsa and you get the chart, moon sign and nakshatra. The nakshatra gives the naming syllables. A detailed reading can wait; the accurate record cannot.

Why Make the Kundli in the First Weeks
In many families the kundli is made within days of the birth, because the nakshatra is needed for the naming ceremony. There is a practical reason too. The details a chart depends on are easiest to get right now. The hospital discharge papers are in hand, the nurse or doctor who noted the time can still be asked, and nobody has yet rounded "4:47" to "about quarter to five".
Twenty years later, when the same chart is needed for education choices or kundli milan before marriage, a wrong time cannot be fixed easily. Making the kundli early is less about prediction and more about keeping a clean record.
The Birth Time: Which Moment Counts
Traditional texts discuss several candidate moments: the first breath, the first cry, the cutting of the cord, the moment the baby is fully delivered. Astrologers do not all agree. In practice, most work with the time written in the hospital record, which is normally the moment of delivery, and that is the convention we follow.
What matters more than the theory is consistency. Use one documented time and do not adjust it to get a "better" chart. A few minutes rarely change the moon sign or nakshatra, but they can change the lagna (ascendant), which shifts roughly every two hours, and the navamsa chart, which shifts every thirteen minutes or so.
Getting the Time From the Hospital
Ask for the time in writing before you leave. It usually appears in the delivery notes, the discharge summary or the birth intimation the hospital sends to the municipal registrar. The birth certificate itself often carries only the date, so do not rely on it for the hour.
Check whether the time is in 24-hour format. "04:10" on a form can mean early morning, and a 12-hour error moves every house in the chart. If the baby was born abroad, note the local time and whether daylight saving was in effect that day.
If the family only has an approximate time, write down the range honestly, for example "between 10:30 and 11:00 pm". An astrologer can work with a known range. A guessed exact minute misleads everyone who reads the chart later.
Birth Details Checklist
| Detail | Where to get it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Date of birth | Hospital record, birth certificate | Fixes the positions of the slow planets and the Sun |
| Exact time, to the minute | Delivery notes or discharge summary | Decides the lagna, house placements and navamsa |
| AM/PM or 24-hour format | Same document; confirm with staff | A 12-hour error produces a completely different chart |
| Place of birth (town, district) | Hospital address | Gives latitude and longitude for the lagna |
| Time zone and daylight saving | Relevant only for births outside India | An unadjusted hour moves the lagna |
| Name of the hospital | Discharge papers | Lets you re-request the record years later |
Making the Janam Kundli Online, Step by Step
- Open a Vedic kundli generator. Check that it states the ayanamsa; Lahiri is the standard in India.
- Enter the baby's name (a placeholder is fine if the name is not decided), sex, date, time and place.
- Choose the place from the dropdown rather than typing it freely, so the right coordinates are used.
- Generate the chart and save or print the PDF.
- Note down the lagna, the moon sign (rashi), the janma nakshatra with its pada, and the dasha balance at birth.
Free tools are accurate for these calculations as long as the inputs are right. Our guide to making a janam kundli online as a PDF covers the settings and five checks to run on the result. The site's own kundali generator is linked from the home page.
What the Baby's Kundli Shows First
For a newborn, four entries in the chart are used straight away:
- Janma nakshatra and pada — the Moon's lunar mansion and its quarter. This sets the naming syllable.
- Rashi (moon sign) — the sign the family will use for the child's rashifal. Our article on moon sign vs sun sign explains why Indian astrology uses this sign, not the Western sun sign.
- Lagna — the rising sign, which forms the first house and the frame for the rest of the chart.
- Dasha balance at birth — which planetary period the child is born into, and how much of it remains. The mahadasha guide explains how this is calculated from the nakshatra.
The twelve houses, yogas and divisional charts are all present from day one, but there is little reason to interpret them in detail for an infant.
Nakshatra and the Naming Syllable
Each of the 27 nakshatras is divided into four padas, and each pada is assigned a syllable. A child born with the Moon in Rohini's first pada, for example, traditionally gets a name starting with "O"; the second pada gives "Va", the third "Vi", the fourth "Vu". This is the basis of the rashi naam.
Many families now give a public name chosen for meaning or sound and keep the nakshatra-based name for religious use. Both are accepted practices. If you want the syllable approach, take the pada from the generated chart, not from an online name list that guesses it from the birth date alone, since the Moon changes nakshatra roughly once a day.
Some families also check the name's numerology. That is a separate system; our piece on name numerology describes how it works and where it stops.
Gand Mool Nakshatra: What It Means and What It Does Not
Parents are often told, sometimes in an alarming way, that their baby was born in "gand mool". The term covers six nakshatras that sit at the junctions where a water sign ends and a fire sign begins. Tradition treats these junctions (gandanta) as sensitive and prescribes a shanti puja.
Here is what it does not mean: it does not mean the child is unlucky, or a danger to a parent, or that something bad is bound to happen. Roughly one baby in four or five is born under one of these six nakshatras, simply because six of the twenty-seven are included. Traditional texts also qualify the effect by pada, so not every gand mool birth is treated the same way.
The customary remedy is the Gand Mool Shanti, usually performed about 27 days after birth, when the Moon returns to the same nakshatra. It is a prayer for the child's wellbeing, not a repair job. If your family wishes to perform it, it can be done calmly and without expense beyond what you choose. Our page on nakshatra shanti puja vidhi describes the procedure.
The Six Gand Mool Nakshatras
| Nakshatra | Sign | Ruling planet | Junction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ashwini | Mesh (Aries) | Ketu | Start of a fire sign, after Meen |
| Ashlesha | Kark (Cancer) | Mercury | End of a water sign, before Simha |
| Magha | Simha (Leo) | Ketu | Start of a fire sign, after Kark |
| Jyeshtha | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Mercury | End of a water sign, before Dhanu |
| Moola | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Ketu | Start of a fire sign, after Vrishchik |
| Revati | Meen (Pisces) | Mercury | End of a water sign, before Mesh |
Caesarean Births and Choosing a Muhurat
With planned caesarean deliveries, some families ask an astrologer to pick an auspicious time. Our position is simple: the obstetrician decides the timing. Medical factors such as the baby's maturity, the mother's condition and theatre availability come first, every time.
If the doctor offers a genuine choice between two safe slots, a family may consult a muhurat within that window. That is a reasonable use of astrology. Asking a doctor to bring a delivery forward or delay it for a chart is not. A kundli made from a scheduled birth is read exactly like any other.
Twins and Births Close Together
Twins born a few minutes apart often share the same moon sign, nakshatra and lagna. Their charts can still differ in the finer divisional charts, which move faster. Record each twin's time separately; do not use one time for both.
Astrologers have long debated how twins can live different lives with near-identical charts. The honest answer is that the chart is only one input, and upbringing, choices and circumstance shape each child differently.
Janam Kundli for a Baby Girl
The calculation for a baby girl is identical. The same date, time and place give the same chart regardless of sex. Some software asks for sex only because a few later interpretations, mainly in marriage matching, are read differently for the bride and groom.
Be wary of anyone who reads a girl's chart at birth mainly for her future marriage, or labels her manglik in the first weeks of life. Manglik status is relevant only at the time of matching, decades away, and even then it is one factor among many, as our article on manglik dosha and marriage explains.
What Not to Read Into a Newborn's Chart
A newborn's kundli is best treated as a record, not a verdict. A few cautions we give every family:
- Do not settle a child's career, intelligence or temperament from the chart. Watch the child instead.
- Do not let a "dosha" become a label the child grows up hearing.
- Do not buy gemstones for an infant. Stones are chosen for an adult's running dasha and can be a choking hazard for a baby.
- Be cautious with anyone who reads the chart and then sells an expensive remedy the same day.
A Baby's Health Comes From the Doctor
Classical texts contain a section called balarishta on early-life health risks. Some astrologers quote it to worried parents. Please do not use a chart to judge a baby's health. Feeding, weight gain, jaundice, fever and vaccinations are matters for your paediatrician. A prayer or puja can sit alongside medical care for the family's peace of mind; it never replaces it, and no astrologer should suggest otherwise.
Keeping the Record for Life
Save the chart PDF in two places, and keep a photograph of the hospital page that shows the time. Write the birth details inside the cover of the baby's first album or file. When the child grows up and wants their own chart read, or the family needs it for kundli milan, the accurate record will be there.
If you are learning to read the chart yourself, our guides to how to read your kundli and the 12 houses in a kundli are good starting points.
When a Personal Reading Makes Sense
Most families need only the chart, the nakshatra and the naming syllable at birth. A fuller reading becomes useful later, at points where a decision is actually being made: choice of subjects, a move abroad, marriage. If you want the newborn's chart checked now, for example to confirm the nakshatra, whether gand mool applies by pada, and the correct naming syllable, a kundali analysis can do that without predictions the child does not need.
