⚡ Quick Answer — Nidhi Shrimali
Your sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun occupied when you were born. Your moon sign is the sign the Moon occupied. The Sun stays in one sign for about a month, while the Moon changes sign every two and a quarter days. Western astrology leads with the sun sign. Vedic astrology leads with the moon sign (rashi) and the ascendant (lagna).

Two Signs, Two Bodies, One Birth Moment
A birth chart is a map of the sky at the moment you were born. Every planet in it sits in one of the twelve zodiac signs. When people say "my sign is Leo", they are naming only one of those positions, usually the Sun's, because that is what newspaper horoscopes taught the world to use.
The Moon is in a sign too, and so is the eastern horizon. Each of the three describes a different layer of the same chart. Asking "moon sign vs sun sign" is really asking which layer a given system treats as the starting point, and why.
Moon Sign Meaning
Your moon sign is the sign in which the Moon was placed at your birth. In jyotish the Moon stands for the mind (manas): how you feel, react, remember, and settle into comfort or unease. It also stands for the mother and for the body's day-to-day rhythm.
Because the Moon moves fast, it is the most personal of the quick indicators. Two people born a month apart share almost nothing in their Moon placement, while two people born on the same day may still have the same moon sign. That speed is exactly why Indian astrology built its daily and monthly forecasting around it.
Sun Sign Meaning
Your sun sign is the sign in which the Sun was placed at your birth. In both traditions the Sun represents the self in its outward form: vitality, authority, the father, ambition, and how you want to be seen.
The Sun takes roughly a month to cross a sign, so everyone born within the same thirty-odd days shares a sun sign. This is what makes it convenient for mass-market horoscopes. You only need your birthday, not the year, time or place, to know it.
Why Your Two Signs Are Usually Different
The Moon completes a full round of the zodiac in about 27.3 days, the Sun in a year. At any given birth the two can be anywhere relative to each other. They fall in the same sign only near a new moon (amavasya), when the Moon is passing the Sun. So for most people, the moon sign and sun sign are different, and that is normal.
The Moon's speed also means your birth time matters. The Moon spends about two and a quarter days in each sign, so if you were born on a day when it changed signs, the hour decides which one is yours. A sun sign is only in doubt if you were born on the day the Sun itself changed signs.
Sidereal and Tropical: Why Your Sun Sign May Shift
Many people who look up their Vedic chart for the first time find their sun sign has moved back by one. Someone who has always called themselves Aries finds the Sun in Meen (Pisces). Nothing is wrong with the chart.
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which starts Aries at the spring equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is anchored to the fixed stars. Because of the slow wobble of the Earth's axis, the two have drifted apart, and the gap (called ayanamsa) is now about 24 degrees. Most Indian astrologers use the Lahiri ayanamsa, the one adopted by the Government of India's calendar reform committee.
Twenty-four degrees is most of a sign. So for roughly the first three weeks of each Western sign, your Vedic Sun sits in the previous sign. The same shift applies to the Moon and the ascendant. If you read a Western moon sign calculator and a Vedic one, expect them to disagree for the same reason. We cover the full difference in our comparison of Vedic and Western birth chart reports.
Western Sun Sign Dates vs Vedic Sun Sign Dates
The table gives approximate dates. The exact day of the Sun's entry (sankranti) moves by a day from year to year, so if your birthday sits on a boundary, check a chart for that year.
| Sign (Rashi) | Western (tropical) dates | Vedic (sidereal) dates, approx. |
|---|---|---|
| Aries (Mesh) | 21 Mar – 19 Apr | 14 Apr – 14 May |
| Taurus (Vrishabh) | 20 Apr – 20 May | 15 May – 14 Jun |
| Gemini (Mithun) | 21 May – 20 Jun | 15 Jun – 16 Jul |
| Cancer (Kark) | 21 Jun – 22 Jul | 17 Jul – 16 Aug |
| Leo (Simha) | 23 Jul – 22 Aug | 17 Aug – 16 Sep |
| Virgo (Kanya) | 23 Aug – 22 Sep | 17 Sep – 16 Oct |
| Libra (Tula) | 23 Sep – 22 Oct | 17 Oct – 15 Nov |
| Scorpio (Vrishchik) | 23 Oct – 21 Nov | 16 Nov – 15 Dec |
| Sagittarius (Dhanu) | 22 Nov – 21 Dec | 16 Dec – 13 Jan |
| Capricorn (Makar) | 22 Dec – 19 Jan | 14 Jan – 12 Feb |
| Aquarius (Kumbh) | 20 Jan – 18 Feb | 13 Feb – 13 Mar |
| Pisces (Meen) | 19 Feb – 20 Mar | 14 Mar – 13 Apr |
Makar Sankranti in mid-January is the most familiar of these entries. It marks the Sun entering sidereal Capricorn, which is why it falls weeks after the Western date.
Moon Sign vs Sun Sign: Which Is More Accurate?
This is the question most people ask, and it deserves a straight answer in two parts.
First, within Vedic astrology, the moon sign is the one the system uses for forecasting. Transits (gochar), Sade Sati, the starting dasha and the daily rashifal are all counted from the Moon. A sun-sign forecast applied to a Vedic method would be using the wrong reference point. In that sense, if you follow Indian astrology, the moon sign is the more relevant of the two.
Second, neither sign is "accurate" in a scientific sense. Controlled tests have not shown that astrologers can predict personality or events from signs better than chance. People use astrology for reflection, timing and tradition. What can be said is that a sign shared by one-twelfth of humanity, which is what a sun sign horoscope is, can only ever be general. The moon sign narrows it a little, the ascendant narrows it more, and a full chart narrows it most.
Moon Sign vs Ascendant (Lagna or Rising Sign)
The ascendant, called lagna in Hindi and the rising sign in Western astrology, is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. The whole zodiac rises in a day, so the lagna changes roughly every two hours. You cannot know it without an accurate birth time and place.
In a Vedic chart the lagna is the first house. It fixes which planet rules which area of life, so the chart's structure hangs on it. The Moon describes the mind; the lagna describes the body, the overall direction of life and the frame for every other house. Many astrologers read a chart twice, once from the lagna and once from the Moon (the chandra kundli), and give weight to what both agree on.
So "moon sign vs lagna" is not a contest. If you have a reliable birth time, the lagna is the foundation of a personal reading and the Moon is the second pillar. If you do not, the Moon is the best you have. Our guide to lagna and ascendant meaning goes deeper into how it is calculated and how to tell if your recorded lagna is wrong.
Sun Sign, Moon Sign and Lagna Side by Side

Star Sign, Zodiac Sign and Nakshatra: Sorting the Words
"Star sign" and "zodiac sign" are casual English terms, and in everyday use both mean the sun sign. When someone asks "what's your star sign?" they almost always mean the Western sun sign.
In Indian usage, "your sign" or "your rashi" means the moon sign. That difference alone explains a lot of confusion between friends comparing horoscopes from different sources.
The nakshatra is a finer division still. The zodiac is split into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each, and your janma nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied at birth. It is sometimes called the birth star, which adds to the muddle, since it is a lunar placement, not a solar one. Each moon sign contains two and a quarter nakshatras.
Moon Sign Meaning in Hindi: Chandra Rashi and Surya Rashi
In Hindi, the moon sign is chandra rashi (चंद्र राशि) and the sun sign is surya rashi (सूर्य राशि). When a family priest or a Hindi newspaper says "aapki rashi", the default meaning is chandra rashi. The ascendant is lagna (लग्न), and the moon's nakshatra is janma nakshatra (जन्म नक्षत्र).
A traditional naming ceremony uses the same idea. The first syllable of a child's "rashi naam" is taken from the pada (quarter) of the janma nakshatra, which is why the name-based rashi people quote is a moon sign, not a sun sign.
What the Moon Sign Decides in Vedic Practice
Much of practical Indian astrology runs from the Moon:
- Daily, weekly and yearly rashifal are written for the twelve moon signs.
- Gochar (transits), such as Jupiter's or Saturn's movement, are judged by the house they pass through counted from the Moon.
- Sade Sati is the seven-and-a-half-year period when Saturn crosses the sign before your moon sign, the moon sign itself and the one after.
- The Vimshottari dasha begins from the lord of the Moon's nakshatra, as explained in our guide to mahadasha.
- Gun milan for marriage compares the two Moons: their signs and nakshatras make up all eight kootas.
- Muhurat selection checks the Moon's strength for the person through tara bala and chandra bala.
The sun sign has none of these jobs in the Vedic system, which is why an Indian astrologer will rarely ask for it.
How to Find Your Moon Sign
You need your date of birth, and preferably the time and place. Any Vedic kundli generator using the Lahiri ayanamsa will show the Moon's sign in the planetary table, usually labelled "Rashi" or "Moon sign". In a North Indian chart, the number written in the box holding "Mo" or "Ch" is the moon sign.
If you have no birth time, check whether the Moon changed signs on your birth date. If it stayed in one sign the whole day, you can be sure of your moon sign even without the hour. If it changed, you will need the time, or at least whether you were born before or after the changeover. Our article on finding your rashi by date of birth walks through this. For reading the rest of the chart once you have it, start with how to read your kundli.
Which Sign to Use When Reading a Horoscope
Match the sign to the system. A Western column dated "Aries, 21 March – 19 April" is written for tropical sun signs; use your sun sign there. A Hindi or Vedic rashifal is written for moon signs; use your chandra rashi there. Mixing them, for example reading a Vedic Mesh forecast because your Western sun sign is Aries, gives you a forecast meant for someone else.
Some readers also check the forecast for their lagna. That is a reasonable second reading if you know your ascendant, since transits counted from the lagna show which houses of your chart are active. On our rashifal page the forecasts are written for moon signs.
What a Single Sign Cannot Tell You
Whichever sign you use, a sign-based forecast is shared by millions of people. It cannot tell you about your marriage timing, career change or health in particular, because those depend on house lordships, planetary strength and the running dasha in your own chart. A rashifal is a broad weather report, not a personal reading.
No sign forecast should drive a medical, legal or financial decision. If you are unwell, see a doctor; if a money decision is at stake, ask a qualified adviser. Astrology can sit alongside those as a way of thinking about timing, never in place of them.
When a question is personal enough that a sign cannot answer it, a full kundali analysis reads the lagna, the Moon and the dashas together.
