Birth Chart Report: Vedic vs Western Explained

Why free birth chart reports from Western sites show different signs from a Vedic kundli: the 24° zodiac gap, aspects vs drishti, timing, and which to use.

⚡ Quick Answer — Why Free Birth Chart Reports Disagree

Most free birth chart report sites online, such as Cafe Astrology and Astro-Seek by default, use Western (tropical) astrology. A Vedic birth chart report uses the sidereal zodiac, which currently sits about 24° behind. That gap moves most planets back one sign, so your Sun, Moon and rising sign can all change. Neither chart is a typo. They measure from different starting points.

Two Zodiacs, One Sky

Both systems divide the sky into the same twelve signs of 30° each, with the same names. Aries is Mesh, Taurus is Vrishabh, and so on. The difference is where they place 0° Aries.

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac. It fixes 0° Aries to the spring equinox, the point where the Sun crosses the celestial equator each March. It is a zodiac of the seasons.

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac. It fixes the signs to the background stars. Because the Earth's axis slowly wobbles (precession), the equinox point drifts backwards against the stars by about one degree every 72 years. The two zodiacs lined up roughly 1,700 years ago and have been separating ever since.

The gap between them is called the ayanamsa. Under the Lahiri ayanamsa, which is the standard in India, it is a little over 24° in 2026. Subtract that from any planet in a Western chart and you get its position in a Vedic chart. A planet at 10° Leo in a tropical chart sits around 16° Cancer in a sidereal one.

Why Your Sun Sign Changes

Since signs are 30° wide and the gap is 24°, about four out of five people find their Sun in the previous sign in a Vedic chart. Only those born in the last week or so of a Western sign keep the same Sun sign.

The table shows the approximate dates the Sun enters each sign in both systems. Exact dates shift by a day from year to year.

SignWestern (tropical) Sun entersVedic (sidereal) Sun enters
Aries / Mesh~21 March~14 April
Taurus / Vrishabh~20 April~15 May
Gemini / Mithun~21 May~15 June
Cancer / Kark~21 June~16 July
Leo / Simha~23 July~17 August
Virgo / Kanya~23 August~17 September
Libra / Tula~23 September~17 October
Scorpio / Vrishchik~23 October~16 November
Sagittarius / Dhanu~22 November~16 December
Capricorn / Makar~22 December~14 January (Makar Sankranti)
Aquarius / Kumbh~20 January~13 February
Pisces / Meen~19 February~14 March

Makar Sankranti falls in mid-January for this reason. It marks the Sun entering sidereal Capricorn, about three weeks after the Western date.

In practice the Sun sign matters less in Vedic work anyway. A Vedic report leads with the Lagna (rising sign) and the Moon sign, or rashi. Our guide to what your Lagna means explains why the rising sign carries more weight than the Sun.

Aspects vs Drishti

A search for a "birth chart report with aspects" usually means a Western report. There, an aspect is an angle between two planets: conjunction (0°), sextile (60°), square (90°), trine (120°) and opposition (180°), each allowed a few degrees of leeway, called an orb. The report lists every pair and describes each one.

Vedic astrology has aspects too, called drishti, but they work by counting houses rather than measuring angles. Every graha looks at the seventh house from itself. Mars also aspects the fourth and eighth, Jupiter the fifth and ninth, and Saturn the third and tenth. Many astrologers give Rahu and Ketu special aspects as well, though traditions differ on this.

So the two reports can describe the same pair of planets very differently. A Western square between Mars and Saturn may not register as a drishti in the Vedic chart at all, and the reverse is also true. Neither report is wrong. They follow different rules.

Which Planets Each Report Uses

A Western report usually includes Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, and often Chiron and asteroids. Much of its language about generations and sudden change comes from these.

A Vedic report stays with the nine grahas visible to classical astronomers, plus the two lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. The nodes carry great weight in Vedic reading. They appear in doshas such as Kaal Sarp, and in long dasha periods of 18 and 7 years. Some Vedic astrologers look at the outer planets as a supplement, but no classical rule depends on them.

How Each Report Handles Timing

This is the biggest practical difference. A Western report times events mainly through transits (where planets are now against your natal chart) and progressions (a symbolic advancing of the chart).

A Vedic report adds the Vimshottari dasha system. It divides a 120-year cycle into planetary periods, starting from the nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth. Each period colours the years it covers, and transits are read within that frame. A good Vedic report gives you the dasha timeline with actual dates, which is often the most useful part. Our article on how mahadasha works explains how to read it.

Reading a Free Report from Cafe Astrology or Astro-Seek

People searching "birth chart report cafe astrology" or "birth chart report astro seek" usually want to know whether those reports apply to them. Both are popular, long-running free sites.

  • Cafe Astrology is built around Western, tropical astrology. Its free reports describe Sun, Moon, rising sign and aspects in tropical terms.
  • Astro-Seek offers many chart types and settings. Its default chart is Western (tropical, Placidus houses), but you can switch to a sidereal zodiac and choose an ayanamsa in the extended settings.

If you compare one of these with a kundli made in India and the signs disagree, check the zodiac setting first. To get an Indian-style chart from a Western tool, select sidereal, Lahiri ayanamsa and whole-sign houses. Then the planet positions should match a standard kundli within a few minutes of arc. The interpretive text will still be Western, though, because the rules underneath it are Western.

Our step-by-step guide to making a janam kundli online as a PDF covers the settings to check and how to verify the result.

Birth Chart Compatibility Reports

A Western birth chart compatibility report uses synastry. It overlays two charts and lists the aspects between one person's planets and the other's. Some also build a composite chart from the midpoints.

A Vedic compatibility report starts with ashtakoot guna milan, which scores eight factors out of 36 based on the two Moon nakshatras. It then checks for Manglik dosha, Nadi and Bhakoot dosha, and their cancellations. A good one goes further and reads the seventh house, Venus, Jupiter and the Navamsa of both people. The score alone is not the verdict. If you need a match for marriage, a full kundli milan reads both charts together rather than stopping at the number.

Which Report Should You Use?

Use the system whose rules you plan to follow. Mixing them causes confusion. Someone reading a Western Leo description against a Vedic Cancer chart will find half of it fits and half does not, and learn nothing from either.

If you want to understand marriage timing, dasha periods, doshas or remedies as they are practised in India, or your family uses a kundli for muhurat and matching, use a Vedic report. If you are curious about Western psychological astrology, a Western report is the right tool for that.

Both systems describe tendencies. Neither can guarantee an outcome, and a report that promises a marriage date, a job offer or a cure is overstating what astrology can do.

What a Free Birth Chart Analysis Leaves Out

A free birth chart analysis online, Western or Vedic, is generated by software. It writes a paragraph for each placement and puts them in order. It cannot weigh one factor against another, so a strong placement and a weak one get equal space, and the sections often contradict each other.

Free Vedic tools often skip divisional charts or print them without reading them. They also cannot tell whether your birth time is reliable. Our comparison of free and paid kundli analysis covers where software is good enough and where it is not. For a detailed list of what a prepared report covers, see what a kundli report contains, or compare the Vedic astrology reports we prepare.

What You Need for Any Accurate Report

Whatever system you choose, the inputs are the same and the rising sign depends on them:

  • Date of birth, entered in the format the site asks for (DD/MM or MM/DD)
  • Exact time of birth, from a hospital record or certificate if possible, with AM/PM checked
  • Place of birth, the town where you were actually born, so the latitude, longitude and time zone are right

The rising sign changes about every two hours, so a birth time that is off by half an hour can move every house. If your time is uncertain, say so to whoever prepares the report. If you are new to reading charts, begin with how to read your own kundli.
