What it cannot do is weigh one factor against another, resolve contradictions between them, or answer a question about your actual situation.

What Free Software Genuinely Does Well

Let me start here, because most articles on this topic are written to make free tools sound useless. They are not.

The calculation layer is solved. Planetary positions come from the same ephemeris data professional astrologers use — commonly the Swiss Ephemeris, derived from JPL's planetary data. A free app and a paid consultation are working from identical numbers.

So free software reliably gives you:

• Accurate planetary longitudes and house placements
• Your ascendant, given a correct birth time
• Vimshottari dasha periods — the full sequence, correctly calculated
• Divisional charts including the Navamsa
• Yoga detection — it can spot the pattern
• Ashtakavarga tables and transit positions

I use software for exactly this. No astrologer computes positions by hand any more, and anyone claiming their calculations are more accurate than the ephemeris is mistaken.

If you want to know where your planets are, a free app will tell you correctly. That is a real service and it costs nothing.

Where It Breaks Down

The gap is not in calculation. It is in judgement — and this is where the free report stops being useful.

A chart contains dozens of factors that qualify one another. Reading it means deciding, for each question asked, which factors dominate, which are neutralised, and which are irrelevant. That is a weighing problem, and rule-based software cannot weigh.

What it produces instead is a concatenation: for each detected condition, it prints the paragraph attached to that condition. The paragraphs do not know about each other.

So a free report will cheerfully tell you on one page that you will have a highly successful career, and on another that you will face persistent professional obstruction — because two different rules fired and each has its own stock text. Neither paragraph is wrong in isolation. The report simply has no mechanism for deciding which one governs.

The Contradiction Problem

This is worth a concrete example, because it is the single clearest illustration.

Suppose a chart has a strong Raj Yoga involving the 10th house — a genuine indicator of professional rise. It also has Saturn afflicting the 10th lord, and the person is running a Saturn Mahadasha.

The free report says both things. "You are destined for authority and recognition." And, elsewhere, "Your career will face repeated delays and obstacles."

An astrologer reading that chart resolves it: the Raj Yoga is real but its full expression waits for the dasha that activates it; the current Saturn period is a consolidation phase where the groundwork is laid but recognition lags. That is a coherent, actionable reading. It tells you to keep building and not to interpret the current stagnation as a verdict on your capability.

The free report gives you both halves and no reconciliation — which typically leaves people more anxious than before they looked.

Resolving contradictions is most of the skill. It is also precisely what cannot be automated with stock paragraphs.

The Birth-Time Problem

Here is a practical issue free tools handle poorly, and it undermines everything downstream.

The ascendant changes roughly every two hours. Every house placement in your chart is measured from it. An hour's error moves planets between houses and changes the reading materially. Manglik status, marriage indications, career houses — all of it shifts.

Many people do not know their birth time precisely. Hospital records, family memory and birth certificates frequently disagree, and "around 5 in the morning" is not good enough for a 7th-house question.

A free app takes whatever you type and produces a confident, detailed report from it. It has no way to flag that your ascendant is borderline, and no procedure for resolving it.

Why Two Apps Give Different Charts

A common and disorienting experience: two free tools give you different Moon signs or different dasha dates.

The usual cause is ayanamsa — the correction between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs. Vedic astrology is sidereal, and several ayanamsa values are in use. Lahiri is the Indian government standard and the most widely used, but Raman, KP and Krishnamurti variants all exist and differ by enough to move a planet across a sign boundary.

A second cause is house system. Whole Sign and Placidus place the same planets in different houses.

Neither app is broken. They made different, defensible choices and did not tell you. If two readings disagree, check the ayanamsa before concluding one is wrong — and know that a practitioner should be able to tell you which they use and why.

How the Generic Text Is Produced

Worth understanding, because it explains the flat, slightly uncanny quality of free reports.

The software detects a condition — Mars in the 7th, say — and prints the paragraph stored against that condition. That paragraph was written once, for everyone with Mars in the 7th, without knowledge of the sign, the aspects, the dasha, or anything else in your chart.

So the text is accurate at the level of the rule and useless at the level of your life. It is why a free report can run to forty pages and still not answer the one question you opened it for.

The length is not depth. It is the number of rules that fired.

When Free Is Genuinely Enough

I would rather you spent nothing than spent badly. Free software is the right tool when:

• You want your chart — positions, ascendant, dasha sequence
• You are learning and want to practise reading placements
• You want to check a factual claim someone made about your chart
• You need today's transits or a panchang
• You are curious rather than facing a decision
• You want a second opinion on a calculation — entirely reasonable

None of that needs a consultation, and anyone telling you it does is selling.

When It Is Not

A reading earns its cost when the question involves weighing, timing or a decision:

• A specific decision with a deadline — accepting an offer, agreeing to a match, committing to a purchase
• Contradictory indications you cannot reconcile
• Marriage matching, where the 7th house, Venus, the Navamsa and Manglik cancellations all interact and a raw score misleads
• Timing — when a period opens or closes
• A remedy recommendation, particularly gemstones. Free tools hand out blue sapphire freely; that stone genuinely should not be self-prescribed.
• An uncertain birth time
• A long difficult period where you need to know what is structural and what will pass

The common thread: free software tells you what is in your chart; a reading tells you what to do about it.

What to Ask Before Paying Anyone

Since you are considering paying someone — me or anyone else — here is how to judge.

• Do they ask for your exact birth time and place? Anyone reading from a date alone is not doing Vedic astrology.
• Will they tell you which ayanamsa and house system they use? A competent practitioner answers immediately.
• Do they explain their reasoning, or only deliver conclusions? You should be able to follow why they said what they said.
• Will they say "I don't know" or "that doesn't apply to you"? Someone who finds a dosha in every chart is finding what they sell.
• Are the remedies proportionate? Mantras, donation and fasting cost almost nothing. Be cautious of large sums to "remove" anything.
• Do they make guarantees? Nobody can promise a marriage, a job or a cure. A guarantee is a warning sign.
• Do they defer to doctors on medical matters? They should, without hesitation.

These questions are worth asking of me too. I would rather you asked them.

An Honest Note on Incentive

I am an astrologer writing about whether to pay an astrologer. You should read this with that in mind, so let me be direct about where the line falls.

Most people who look up their kundli do not need a consultation. They are curious, and free software serves them well. I have no interest in persuading someone to book a reading they do not need — that produces a disappointed client and a bad review, and both are worse for me than the fee is good.

What a reading is actually for is a decision you are stuck on, a contradiction you cannot resolve, or a period you cannot read. In those situations the difference between a stock paragraph and a person who has read several thousand charts is large and it is worth paying for.

And what no astrologer can do is make your decision for you, guarantee an outcome, or substitute for a doctor, a lawyer or an accountant. Anyone who implies otherwise is overselling, and you are right to be sceptical of them.
