Why a Written Report at All

Most people meet astrology through a conversation — a phone consultation, twenty-five minutes, a lot of information arriving quickly. That format has real strengths: you can ask, push back, and get a direct answer to the thing actually worrying you.

Its weakness is that it is gone the moment it ends. Six months later, when the period being discussed actually arrives, you remember a general impression and not the specifics.

A written report solves a different problem. It is a reference you return to. When a difficult year begins, you can look up what the chart said about it, check the dates, and see which remedies were prescribed for exactly this period. The value is not in reading it once; it is in having it when the timing matters.

That is also why length is not the point on its own. A long report that contradicts itself across sections is worse than a short one that does not — a theme this article returns to.

The Dasha Timeline — the Most Useful Part

If you read only one section, read this one.

Vedic astrology's distinguishing feature is not that it describes personality — plenty of systems do that. It is Vimshottari dasha: a sequence of planetary periods, calculated from the Moon's nakshatra at birth, that assigns each stretch of your life to a particular planet.

That is why two people with similar charts can have very different decades. The chart shows what is possible; the dasha decides when.

A good report gives you the full sequence with dates — Mahadasha, and the Antardasha subdivisions inside each — and says what each period tends to bring given your specific chart. Our guide to how Vimshottari dasha works covers the mechanics in detail.

The practical use is planning. If a favourable period for career opens in eighteen months, that changes how you treat the next eighteen months. If a difficult stretch is ending, that is worth knowing while you are still inside it.

Divisional Charts and Why They Matter

This is where cheap reports and real ones separate most visibly.

Your birth chart (D-1) is one chart. Classical Vedic practice also uses divisional charts — the same moment, subdivided, each one magnifying a particular area of life.

• D-9 (Navamsa) — marriage and the deeper strength of every planet. Classical practice weighs it as heavily as the birth chart, and for marriage questions more so.
• D-10 (Dasamsa) — career and professional standing
• D-7 (Saptamsa) — children
• D-4 (Chaturthamsa) — property and fixed assets
• D-12 (Dwadasamsa) — parents

A planet can look strong in the birth chart and be weak in the Navamsa, which changes the reading substantially. Any report that assesses marriage without looking at the D-9, or career without the D-10, has skipped a layer the tradition treats as essential.

Yogas: Named, and Then Qualified

Yogas are specific planetary combinations with traditional meanings — Raj yogas for authority, Dhana yogas for wealth, Aristha yogas for difficulty.

Software finds these reliably. Pattern-matching is exactly what software is good at.

What matters is what comes after the name. A Raj yoga formed by two weak planets, in a chart where the relevant dasha does not arrive until late in life, is not the same as one formed by strong planets in an active period — even though both get the same label.

So a report that lists twenty yogas and explains none of them is telling you very little. The useful version names the yoga, says which planets formed it, whether they are strong enough to deliver, and when the timing activates it.

The Remedies Section

Remedies should follow from the findings, not sit in a generic appendix.

If the report has identified an afflicted Moon, the remedies should address the Moon. If Saturn is causing the difficulty, the remedies should be Saturn remedies — and the report should say why.

What a proper remedies section includes:

• Gemstones, if any, with the reasoning — and, just as importantly, which stones to avoid. Our gemstone guide explains why some stones genuinely should not be self-prescribed.
• Mantras for the planets that need strengthening, with counts and timing
• Charity and fasting — the lowest-cost remedies, and often the most effective
• Timing — which remedies matter most during which upcoming period

A warning worth stating plainly: be cautious of any report whose remedy section is mainly a shopping list. Mantras, donation and fasting cost almost nothing and are the backbone of traditional remedial practice. If everything recommended happens to be expensive, that is a commercial document, not an astrological one.

Real Report vs Auto-Generated PDF

You can generate a 100-page astrology PDF in about four seconds. Many sites do. Here is how to tell what you are looking at.

The last row is worth dwelling on. Instant delivery of a "detailed personal analysis" means nobody looked at it. That is not automatically worthless — the calculations underneath are accurate — but you should know which one you bought.

What You Need to Provide

• Date of birth
• Time of birth, as precisely as you can. This is the one that matters most.
• Place of birth — town or city
• Full name, and gotra if your family observes it

On birth time: the ascendant changes roughly every two hours, and every house placement is measured from it. An hour's error moves planets between houses and changes the reading materially — marriage indications, career houses, Manglik status, all of it.

If your birth time is uncertain, say so when ordering rather than guessing silently. A stated "approximately 4 p.m." is far more useful than a confident 4:00 that was actually 5:30, because it tells the astrologer to treat house-sensitive conclusions with appropriate caution.

What a Report Cannot Do

This section exists because expectation is where disappointment comes from.

• It cannot make your decision. It describes tendency, timing and likelihood. Whether to take the job is still yours.
• It is not a medical document. Traditional health indicators describe constitutional tendency, not diagnosis. If you have a symptom, see a doctor — first, and regardless of what any chart says. A report may sit alongside medical care; it must never delay it.
• It cannot promise outcomes. No marriage date, no salary figure, no guarantee. Anyone promising those is selling certainty that astrology does not offer.
• It cannot be precise about dates beyond the dasha framework. Periods, yes. Specific days for events, no.
• It does not replace effort. The classical position is that remedies clear obstruction from effort already being made.
• It cannot fix a wrong birth time. Garbage in, confident garbage out — which is why the previous section matters.

Report or Consultation — Which You Need

Many people eventually do both: the report as the reference, a consultation when a specific decision arrives. But start with whichever matches the question you have now.

How to Actually Read It

A long report can be overwhelming. What I suggest to clients:

1. Start with the dasha timeline. Find where you are now and what is next. That single page frames everything else.
2. Then read the section for your live question — career, marriage, health. Not all of them at once.
3. Look up the houses named in that section, so the reasoning is visible rather than accepted on authority.
4. Read the remedies for the current period only. Doing everything at once achieves nothing; the tradition assumes sustained practice, not a burst.
5. Put it away. Return when a period changes or a decision arrives. That is what it is for.
6. Do not read the health section anxiously. It describes tendency. If something in it worries you, take that worry to a doctor, which is the correct destination for it.

And one more: a report is a reading, not a verdict. If something in it does not match your lived experience, that is worth raising rather than accepting. Charts are read by people, birth times are sometimes wrong, and a good astrologer would rather be questioned than believed uncritically.
