⚡ Quick Answer — Nidhi Shrimali
A Manglik dosha calculator takes your date, time and place of birth, works out your ascendant and where Mars sits, and reports "Manglik" if Mars falls in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. That is a raw placement, not a verdict. Most calculators skip cancellation rules, and an error of an hour in birth time can change the answer.

What Manglik Dosha Means
Manglik dosha means Mars (Mangal) sits in one of the houses of a birth chart that tradition links to marriage and home life. The word "Manglik" comes from Mangal, and "dosha" means a flaw or fault. So the phrase means "a Mars condition in the chart that needs looking at". It is also called Mangal dosha, Kuja dosha and Bhaum dosha.
Mars stands for drive, heat and force. In the houses of marriage, family and home, tradition holds that this force can come out as impatience, quick temper or friction in the early years together. That is all the idea claims. It does not predict a spouse's death, and on its own it is not a reason to refuse a match. The longer explanation of meaning and severity is in how serious Manglik dosha is for marriage. This page is about the calculation itself: how a tool reaches its answer, and when to doubt it.
How a Manglik Dosha Calculator Works
Every Manglik calculator, from a free website to the software an astrologer uses, follows the same basic steps. Knowing them helps you judge any result you are shown.
- Convert local birth time to universal time. The tool looks up the time zone in force at your birthplace on your birth date.
- Find the positions of the planets for that moment, using an astronomical table called an ephemeris.
- Shift them to the sidereal zodiac that Vedic astrology uses, by subtracting the ayanamsa. Today that correction is about 24 degrees.
- Find the ascendant (lagna), the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birthplace at that minute. This needs your latitude and longitude.
- Count the houses from the ascendant and note which one holds Mars.
- Compare against the list of 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 and 12. If Mars is in one of them, the tool says Manglik.
- Optionally repeat from the Moon and from Venus, which some traditions also count.
Steps 1 to 6 are pure arithmetic, and a good tool gets them right. The trouble starts after step 6. That is where astrology begins: judging strength, applying cancellations and reading the whole chart. Many tools stop at step 6 and print the answer in red.
What to Enter, and What Each Field Changes
A calculator is only as good as the details you give it. Here is what each field does to the result.
| Field | What it decides | How sensitive the Manglik result is |
|---|---|---|
| Date of birth | Mars's sign, the Moon's sign, Venus's sign | Low for Mars, since it stays in one sign for weeks; higher for the Moon, which changes sign every two to three days |
| Time of birth | The ascendant, and so every house number | Very high. The ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours |
| Place of birth | Latitude and longitude for the ascendant; time zone | Medium. A wrong city in the same state rarely changes it; a wrong country can |
| AM / PM | Twelve hours of difference | Very high. A swapped AM/PM puts the ascendant in a completely different sign |
| Time zone / daylight saving | Conversion to universal time | High for births abroad, and for Indian births in the Second World War years, when Indian clocks ran an hour ahead |
| Ayanamsa setting | Sidereal positions | Usually low between Vedic schools; very high if the tool uses the Western zodiac with no ayanamsa at all |
If your family's record says "around dawn" or "after the evening aarti", treat any result as provisional. A birth time noted on a hospital discharge paper is better than one remembered years later.
Can You Calculate It by Date of Birth Alone?
Many people search for a "manglik dosha calculator by date of birth" because they do not know their birth time. The honest answer is: only partly.
From the date alone, a tool can find the sign Mars was in, because Mars moves slowly. It usually stays in one sign for six or seven weeks, and longer when it turns retrograde. Most of the time it can also find the Moon's sign, though not on a day when the Moon changed sign. With those two, it can tell you whether Mars falls in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th position counted from the Moon. Some families treat that as a rough check.
What it cannot do without the time is find the ascendant, and the ascendant is the main reference point in north Indian practice. A date-only result is a different question with a weaker answer. If a website gives you a firm "Manglik: Yes" from a date alone, it is either counting from the Moon without telling you, or guessing.
If the birth time is lost, an astrologer can sometimes narrow it down from known life events. This is called birth time rectification. It is slow, careful work and it gives a likely range, not a certainty.
A Worked Example, Step by Step
This is an illustrative chart made up to show the method, not a client's.
Say the calculation finds a Taurus ascendant, Mars in Scorpio, the Moon in Leo and Venus in Libra.
- From the ascendant: Taurus is house 1, so Scorpio is house 7. Mars in the 7th means Manglik.
- From the Moon: Leo is 1, so Scorpio is 4. Mars in the 4th from the Moon also counts as Manglik.
- From Venus: Libra is 1, so Scorpio is 2. Mars in the 2nd from Venus counts too, in the traditions that include the 2nd house.
A basic calculator reports this person as Manglik from all three points, and some will print "High Manglik". But look at the sign. Mars is in Scorpio, its own sign. Mars in its own sign is one of the most widely cited cancellation conditions. A reading that applies that rule treats the dosha as cancelled or much reduced. The arithmetic was correct; the conclusion was not.
That gap between the arithmetic and the judgement is the reason for the rest of this page.
Why Two Calculators Give Different Answers
Parents often bring me two printouts, one saying Manglik and one saying not. Usually neither tool is broken. They are answering slightly different questions.
| Cause | What happens | How to spot it |
|---|---|---|
| Which houses count | Some lists include the 2nd house; some southern lists treat it as central; some leave it out | Check whether the tool lists the houses it uses |
| Which reference point | Ascendant only, or ascendant plus Moon, or all three with Venus | Look for "from Lagna / from Moon" in the output |
| Sign chart vs bhava chart | In a whole-sign chart Mars's house is its sign. In a bhava (cusp-based) chart, Mars near a sign edge can fall into the next house | Mars at the very start or end of a sign is the warning |
| Western zodiac | A tool with no ayanamsa shifts every planet about 24 degrees, often into a different sign | Compare the Sun sign it shows with your Vedic rashi |
| Birth time and time zone | A small error moves the ascendant; a wrong zone moves it more | Re-run with the time 30 minutes either side and see if the answer flips |
| Cancellation rules | One tool applies none, another applies a few, a reading applies all that fit | Look for any mention of "cancelled" or "bhanga" |
| Strength scale | "Partial", "low" and percentage scores are each site's own invention | A percentage has no classical basis; ask what it is a percentage of |
The re-run test in the fifth row is the most useful thing you can do at home. If moving the birth time half an hour either way flips the answer, your result is sitting on a boundary, and only a careful reading should decide it.
Reading the Result: Yes, No, Partial, High, Low
Calculators label results in different ways. Here is how to read the common ones.
- "Manglik: Yes" means Mars sits in one of the listed houses from the reference point the tool uses. It is a raw placement, nothing more.
- "Manglik: No" is more reliable than a yes, but only if your birth time is sound and the tool counts from the ascendant.
- "Partial" or "Anshik" Manglik usually means Manglik from one reference point and not the others, or Mars in a house the tool rates as milder, such as the 2nd or 12th. The label varies between sites.
- "High" or "Low" is the tool's own scoring. Some rate the 7th and 8th houses higher; some rate the 1st and 8th higher. There is no single standard.
- "Cancelled" is the most useful word a tool can show, because it means some judgement was applied. Ask which rule it used.
Treat any calculator output as a starting question: "is this worth a proper look?" It is not an answer to "can this marriage go ahead?"
What Online Calculators Usually Skip
The full list of cancellation conditions is set out in the cancellations most matchings skip, so I will not repeat it here. In short, they include Mars in its own or exalted sign, Jupiter's aspect on Mars, certain ascendants where Mars is a friendly or ruling planet, and the case where both partners are Manglik.
Beyond cancellations, a calculator also misses:
- The rest of the marriage picture: the 7th house lord, Venus, the Navamsa (D9) chart and the running dasha.
- Timing: whether a Mars period is running at the time of marriage, or long past.
- The other person's chart. Manglik matters in matching, so a single-chart result answers only half the question.
This is why a Kundli Milan done by an astrologer looks at Manglik status for both charts together with the cancellations. On our Kundli Milan page you can book that reading for both sets of birth details.
Is Manglik Dosha Permanent?
The placement is permanent. Your birth chart is a picture of one moment, and Mars will always be where it was when you were born. No puja, gemstone or ritual moves it.
What can change is how much it matters, and the tradition itself says so in three ways.
- Cancellation is permanent too. If a cancelling condition is in your chart, it was there from birth. Many people told they "have" Manglik dosha never had an active one.
- Age. A widely held belief says the effect softens after 28, the age at which Mars is said to "mature". You will hear it stated as "Manglik dosha ends at 28". I treat it as a softening, not an expiry date, and I do not tell families the dosha disappears on a birthday.
- Dasha periods. Mars expresses itself more strongly in its own Mahadasha or Antardasha. Outside those periods its effect on daily life is usually milder.
So "is manglik dosha permanent?" has a two-part answer: the placement, yes; its weight in your life, no.
Does Manglik Dosha Have Benefits?
Yes, though the word "dosha" hides them. Mars is not a planet of harm. It is the planet of courage, drive, protection and hard physical effort. A strong Mars in an angular house often goes with:
- Energy and stamina, and a willingness to work hard for a goal
- Courage in conflict, and a protective instinct towards family
- Decisiveness, and dislike of drift and delay
- An aptitude, in many charts, for work that needs nerve or physical skill: the forces, police, surgery, engineering, sport, property or running a business
These are tendencies, not promises. A Manglik chart does not guarantee success in any career, and a non-Manglik chart can be just as driven. The point is that the same force that can cause friction at home is useful outside it. The benefits of Mangal dosha come down to direction: the energy is real, and the question is where it goes. More on Mars's role by sign and house is in our guide to Mangal grah.
How to Remove Manglik Dosha: What Is Possible
Searches for "how to remove manglik dosha" and "mangal dosha how to remove" often lead to offers of expensive rituals that claim to delete it. Here is what tradition actually holds.
A remedy does not remove a placement. Remedies are meant to calm an active Mars: to steady the temperament, give the energy a channel and bring a sense of discipline. The traditional ones are simple: Hanuman Chalisa and a fast on Tuesdays, the Mangal beej mantra, donations of red lentils or jaggery on Tuesdays, and Mangal Shanti puja where the placement is strong and uncancelled. Red coral is sometimes prescribed, but only after a reading, because strengthening Mars is the wrong move for some charts. The full remedy lists, with method, are in the complete Manglik dosha guide, and in Hindi in मांगलिक दोष निवारण.
Three limits to keep in mind:
- First check whether there is anything to remedy. A cancelled dosha needs no remedy.
- No remedy guarantees a marriage, a happy one or a quick one. It is a practice of discipline and faith, not a switch.
- Temper is not only astrological. Where anger or conflict at home is serious, counselling and honest conversation come first. A remedy sits alongside them, never in place of them.
Be wary of anyone quoting a large sum to "finish" Manglik dosha for good. No such ritual exists in the classical tradition.
Manglik Dosha in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam
The same condition goes by different names across India, and searches in each language land on the same question.
- Telugu: కుజ దోషం (Kuja dosham). Kuja is another name for Mars.
- Kannada: ಕುಜ ದೋಷ (Kuja dosha).
- Tamil: செவ்வாய் தோஷம் (Sevvai dosham). Sevvai is Mars, and also the Tamil name for Tuesday.
- Malayalam: ചൊവ്വാ ദോഷം (Chovva dosham).
- Hindi: मांगलिक दोष or मंगल दोष.
South Indian families often check Mars from the ascendant, the Moon and Venus together, and some give the 2nd house more weight than north Indian practice does. That is one more reason a Telugu calculator and a Hindi one can disagree on the same birth details. Our consultations are in Hindi and English. If your family uses the South Indian chart format, bring the chart as it is and we can read it.
Using the Result in Kundli Matching
Manglik status matters mainly in marriage matching, and there the rule most families hear first is the right one to hold on to: when both partners are Manglik, the dosha is traditionally considered neutralised. Explaining why is covered in when both partners are Manglik.
A sensible order for using a calculator result in matching:
- Run both charts with the most reliable birth times you have.
- If neither is Manglik, the question is closed; go on to Guna Milan.
- If both are Manglik, it is traditionally neutralised.
- If only one is, have that chart checked for cancellations before anything else.
- Read the result alongside the 36-point score, which measures something quite different. What the 36 gunas measure explains that score.
Our Kundli Milan consultation covers steps 3 to 5 for both charts, including cancellations.
Seven Checks Before You Trust a Result
- Is the birth time written down, not remembered? Is AM/PM right?
- Is the birthplace correct, including the country for births abroad?
- Does the tool use the Vedic sidereal zodiac, with an ayanamsa such as Lahiri?
- Does it say which reference point it counted from: ascendant, Moon or Venus?
- Does it list the houses it treats as Manglik?
- Does the answer hold when you move the birth time 30 minutes either way?
- Does it mention cancellations at all?
If you answer "no" or "not sure" to more than two of these, treat the result as a prompt to have the chart read, not as a finding. For reading the rest of the chart yourself, start with how to read your kundli.
What No Calculator Can Tell You
A calculator can say where Mars is. It cannot say how two people will treat each other, whether a family will support a marriage, or how much patience either partner has learned. Those decide more about a marriage than any single placement does.
Astrology, read well, can point out tendencies and timing. It cannot promise that a marriage will happen, last or be happy, and it should never be the only reason two suitable people are kept apart. If a Manglik result is causing fear in your family, the first step is not a ritual. It is a careful check of whether the dosha is active at all.
