What Kundli Matching Actually Is

Kundli Milan — also called Guna Milan or Ashtakoot matching — compares two birth charts to assess marital compatibility. The system is attributed to the sage Parashara and has been in continuous use for centuries.

Here is the part most people do not realise: the 36-point score is calculated almost entirely from one factor — the position of the Moon's nakshatra in each chart. Not the Sun, not the ascendant, not the 7th house.

That is a deliberate design. In Vedic astrology the Moon governs the mind, emotional temperament and instinctive response. Ashtakoot is asking a narrow question: will these two minds settle together?

It is a genuinely useful screen. It is also a screen, not a verdict — and treating it as a verdict is the single most common mistake families make.

The Eight Kootas and Their Points

Note how the weighting works. Nadi alone carries 8 of the 36 points, and Bhakoot another 7 — together nearly half the total. A match can lose 15 points on those two factors alone while scoring perfectly everywhere else. That is why two couples with similar-sounding scores can have completely different underlying pictures.

What Your Score Actually Means

The 18-point threshold is conventional, not scriptural absolute. It exists because below roughly half marks, enough of the eight factors are misaligned that the temperamental friction becomes worth naming.

What the Score Does Not Measure

This is the section I wish every family read before rejecting a match on a number.

Ashtakoot is built on the Moon's nakshatra. It therefore says nothing whatsoever about:

• The 7th house in either chart — the actual house of marriage, spouse and partnership
• Venus — the significator of love, romance and marital happiness
• Jupiter — for a woman's chart, traditionally the significator of the husband
• Manglik status — Mars affliction is a separate assessment entirely
• Longevity factors in either chart
• The running dashas — whether the marriage begins in a supportive period
• The Navamsa (D-9) — the divisional chart that in classical practice carries more weight for marriage than the birth chart itself
• Financial and career indications that shape a household's actual stability

A matching that reports only a Guna score has examined one factor and skipped the ones classical astrology treats as more important. That is why our Kundli Milan consultation covers all of these rather than returning a number.

Nadi Dosha — The One That Ends Matches

Nadi carries the most points and causes the most anguish, so it deserves proper treatment.

Every nakshatra is classified into one of three Nadis — Aadi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta), Antya (Kapha). When both partners share the same Nadi, all 8 points are lost and Nadi Dosha is declared. The traditional concern is difficulty with children and constitutional incompatibility.

It is the most common reason a family rejects an otherwise good match.

But the classical texts themselves provide exceptions. Nadi Dosha is considered cancelled when:

• Both partners have the same Moon sign but different nakshatras
• Both have the same nakshatra but different padas (quarters)
• The nakshatra lords are the same planet
• There is strong Graha Maitri between the Moon-sign lords
• The couple belong to different gotras — which most do

In practice a meaningful proportion of apparent Nadi Doshas are cancelled by one of these. Whether yours is cancelled needs an actual chart, not a table.

Bhakoot Dosha and Its Cancellations

Bhakoot carries 7 points and assesses the relationship between the two Moon signs. Certain distances between them — 6/8, 9/5 and 2/12 — score zero and are called Bhakoot Dosha.

Bhakoot Dosha is likewise cancelled under recognised conditions — most commonly when the lords of the two Moon signs are the same planet or are mutual friends, or when strong Graha Maitri is present.

Where Manglik Fits In

Manglik dosha is not part of the 36 points at all. It is assessed separately, and this confuses almost everyone.

A chart is Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant. The traditional concern is friction, temper and discord in marriage.

Three things worth knowing:

• Manglik status is far more common than people assume — a substantial share of charts qualify under the broadest definition.
• If both partners are Manglik, the dosha is traditionally considered neutralised. This is the standard classical position.
• Numerous cancellations exist — Mars in its own or exaltation sign, Mars aspected by Jupiter, certain ascendants, and age above 28 in several traditions.

If Your Score Is Low

Before anything else: find out which kootas failed. A score of 17 built from losing Nadi (8) and Bhakoot (7) is a very different situation from 17 spread thinly across six minor factors.

1. Check the cancellations. Nadi and Bhakoot both have well-established exceptions. Many low scores lift once these are applied.
2. Look at the 7th house and Venus in both charts. Classical practice weighs these more heavily than the Guna total for marital outcome.
3. Examine the Navamsa. A weak Ashtakoot score with a strong D-9 is a materially better prospect than the reverse.
4. Check the dashas. Marrying during a supportive period matters more than most people credit.
5. Then decide. With all of it in front of you, not one number.

I have seen matches at 16 and 17 gunas that were, on full examination, sound — and families who walked away from them on the strength of a free online calculator.

Why High Scores Sometimes Fail

The reverse case is just as instructive, and it is the strongest argument against treating the number as a verdict.

A couple can score 30+ and still struggle, because Ashtakoot measured mental compatibility and nothing else. If the 7th house is afflicted in one chart, if Venus is combust or debilitated, if a difficult dasha runs through the early years, or if the Navamsa is weak — none of that shows up in the Guna score at all.

The number is a screen for one axis of compatibility. Marriages are shaped by many more, astrological and otherwise.

Which brings me to the thing no chart contains: how two people treat each other under stress, whether they can repair after conflict, whether their families will let them build something. Astrology describes tendency and timing. It does not substitute for knowing the person.

An Honest Position

I will say plainly what I tell families in consultation.

Kundli matching is a genuine tool and I use it daily. The Ashtakoot system encodes real observation about temperamental compatibility, and it is worth doing properly.

It is also routinely misused — as a single number, from a free calculator, applied as a veto over a decision two adults are entitled to make. That is not what the system was designed for, and the classical texts themselves are far more flexible than the way the score is commonly wielded.

What I will not do is tell a family a marriage is doomed because of a score, or that a dosha cannot be worked with. Where a genuine difficulty shows in the charts, my job is to name it clearly, explain what it does and does not mean, and set out the remedies and timing that help. The decision belongs to the couple and their families.

And if a match is being pushed forward or blocked for reasons that have nothing to do with astrology, no score will settle that. It is worth being honest with yourself about which question you are actually asking.
