Janam Kundli Reader Online: Read Your Old Patri

How janam kundli readers work, how to decode a handwritten patri (short forms, samvat, ishtakaal to birth time), what free apps miss and what a reading costs.

⚡ Quick Answer — Nidhi Shrimali

A janam kundli reader online is any service that explains a birth chart you already have. Software readers and AI apps match each placement to stock text, which is fine for learning the terms. A human reader checks your birth time first, weighs the factors against each other and answers your actual question. For an old handwritten patri, you can recover the birth time from its ishtakaal.

Three Kinds of Kundli Reader

"Kundli reader" is used for three quite different things, and it helps to know which one you are looking at before you type in your birth details.

  • A software reader calculates the chart and prints a paragraph for each placement: "Sun in the 10th house gives…", "Moon in Vrishabha makes…". The paragraphs are written in advance. Two people with the Sun in the 10th get the same paragraph.
  • An AI reader does the same job with fluent language and lets you ask follow-up questions. It sounds more personal. Underneath, it still has no way to check whether your birth time is right, and it tends to agree with whatever you ask.
  • A human reader is an astrologer who looks at your chart and your question. This is slower and costs more, but it is the only one of the three that can say "this part of your chart matters more than that part, and here is why".

Each has a use. If you want to learn what your chart contains, a free reader is a fine start. If you have a decision to make, you need the third kind.

You Have a Paper Janam Patri

Many families in Rajasthan, Gujarat, UP and MP still have a handwritten janam patri made by the family priest within days of a child's birth. Some are a single folded sheet. Others are long scrolls with every divisional chart and decades of dasha written out by hand.

These patris are often more reliable than people assume. The priest usually wrote the time from what the family told him on the day, not from memory years later. The trouble is that they are hard to read: dates in Vikram Samvat, time in ghati and pal, planets in two-letter Hindi short forms, and handwriting that has faded.

The rest of this guide helps you decode one. Even if you plan to have it read by an astrologer, knowing what it says lets you check that the online version matches. The guide to making a janam kundli online as a PDF covers the opposite situation, where you have birth details but no chart.

What the Top of a Patri Tells You

A traditional patri opens with an invocation such as "श्री गणेशाय नमः", then a block of birth details written as a long sentence or a list. Look for these words:

  • संवत (Samvat) and शाके (Shake): the year in Vikram Samvat and Shaka era.
  • मास, पक्ष, तिथि: the lunar month, the bright or dark fortnight (shukla or krishna), and the lunar day.
  • वार: the weekday.
  • नक्षत्र, योग, करण: the panchang elements of the moment.
  • इष्टकाल (Ishtakaal): the birth time, counted from sunrise.
  • सूर्योदय: sometimes the sunrise time used.
  • जन्म लग्न, जन्म राशि: the rising sign and Moon sign.
  • भुक्त / भोग्य दशा: the balance of the planetary period running at birth.

The weekday and tithi are your best tools for checking the date, because they can be confirmed against any panchang for that year.

Reading the Hindi Short Forms

Inside the chart, planets are written as one or two letters. Once you know them, the drawing stops looking like a puzzle.

सूसूर्यSunSu, र (Ravi)
चंचन्द्रMoonCh, Mo
मंमंगलMarsभौ (Bhaum), Ma
बुबुधMercuryBu, Me

शुशुक्रVenusSk, Ve
श / शंशनिSaturnSa
राराहुRahuRa

ल / लग्नलग्नAscendantAsc

Small marks next to a planet carry meaning too. व or (व) usually means vakri (retrograde), अ can mark asta (combust), and some priests note the degree beside each planet. If a mark is unclear, ask rather than guess.

Finding Lagna and Planets in the Drawing

Most patris from North and West India use the diamond chart. The numbers inside it are signs, not houses: 1 is Mesh (Aries), 2 Vrishabh, and so on to 12 Meen. The top centre diamond is always the first house, so the number written there is your lagna.

Planets sit in whichever diamond holds their sign. If the top diamond shows 5 and चं is written in the diamond marked 2, the Moon is in Vrishabh, which is the 10th house counted from Simha lagna.

A patri usually has at least two charts: the lagna chart and the Chandra (Moon) chart. Many also have the navamsa. Check the heading above each drawing before reading it. A common mistake is to read the Moon chart as if it were the birth chart.

For the full method of reading houses and planets once you have found them, see how to read your kundli, or the Hindi guide kundli kaise padhein.

Converting Samvat Dates

Patris give the year in Vikram Samvat and often in the Shaka era as well. As a working rule:

  • Vikram Samvat runs about 57 years ahead of the Common Era. In North India the samvat year changes in Chaitra (March or April), so for births in roughly January to March, subtract 56 instead of 57. Some regions, including Gujarat, start the year after Diwali, which shifts the changeover.
  • Shaka runs about 78 years behind the Common Era, again changing in spring.

Then use the month, paksha and tithi to find the day. A panchang for that year, or any online panchang that goes back far enough, will show which date had that tithi in that month. The weekday on the patri should match. If it does not, you have the wrong year or the wrong month.

Getting the Birth Time Back from Ishtakaal

This is the step that rescues many old patris. Ishtakaal is the time between sunrise and birth, written in ghati and pal:

  • 1 ghati = 24 minutes
  • 1 pal = 24 seconds (60 pal make one ghati)

So an ishtakaal of 10 ghati 30 pal is 240 minutes plus 12 minutes, or 4 hours 12 minutes after sunrise. If sunrise in the birth town that day was 6:20 a.m., the birth time is about 10:32 a.m.

Two cautions. First, use the sunrise for that date and that town, not today's sunrise. Many patris write the sunrise time they used, and if yours does, use it. Second, ishtakaal can exceed 30 ghati for night births, because the count runs from sunrise to the next sunrise. 45 ghati is 18 hours after sunrise.

Once you have a clock time, enter it into a generator and compare the lagna and Moon sign with what the patri says. If both match, you have recovered the chart. If the lagna is one sign off, the birth was probably near a lagna change, and an astrologer should look at it.

Janam Kundli Kaise Nikale and Kaise Banaye

"Janam kundli kaise nikale" can mean two things, and the answer differs.

If you know your birth date, time and place, making a kundli is a calculation. Enter the details in any reliable generator with Lahiri ayanamsa and save the result. Our step-by-step PDF guide covers the settings.

If you do not have your birth details, you have to recover them. In order of reliability:

  1. The hospital discharge summary or birth record, which often has the time.
  2. The birth certificate issued by the municipality, which often does not.
  3. The family's paper patri, decoded as above.
  4. A parent's or grandparent's memory, cross-checked with events they remember around the birth.

When nothing gives a time, a chart can still be made for the Moon sign and nakshatra, which change slowly. The lagna and houses cannot be trusted without a time. Birth time rectification from life events is possible but is skilled, slow work, and nobody can promise an exact minute from it.

Janam Kundli Online Kaise Dekhe

To see your janam kundli online, you have three routes:

  • Generate it fresh from birth details on a kundli website or app.
  • Photograph your paper patri and keep it with the generated version, so you can compare the two whenever you need to.
  • Send the patri photo to an astrologer who reads it directly. A trained reader can read a clear photo of a handwritten patri as easily as a printout.

When you photograph a patri, lay it flat in daylight, capture the header with the ishtakaal and every chart on the page, and take a second photo of any faded section up close. Do not post the photo publicly. A patri carries your full date and place of birth.

Free Readers and Kundli Apps

A free kundli reader or janam kundli app is worth using for three things: keeping your chart on your phone, learning which planet sits where, and looking up what a term means. Most reputable apps calculate accurately, because the astronomy is well established.

Where they fall short is interpretation. A reader app prints a paragraph for each placement on its own. A real chart has a dozen placements pulling in different directions, and the app cannot tell which one dominates, so the text often contradicts itself. The comparison of free and paid kundli analysis shows where this breaks down.

Apps also cannot detect a wrong birth time. If you enter 7 p.m. when you were born at 7 a.m., the app will read the wrong chart with complete confidence.

What a Human Reader Does Differently

When I read a chart, the first ten minutes go on checking it: does the lagna fit how the person describes themselves, do past events line up with the dasha periods, does the patri agree with the generated chart? Only then does interpretation begin.

After that, a reader does three things software does not:

  • Weighs the chart. A strong Jupiter aspecting the 7th house may matter more than a weak Mars placed in it. Software reports both at equal volume.
  • Uses timing. The running mahadasha and antardasha, along with current transits, decide which promises in the chart are active now.
  • Answers your question. A reading starts from "will this job change suit me" or "why has marriage been delayed", not from a list of all twelve houses.

Our kundali analysis works this way: you send your birth details or a photo of your patri along with your question, and the reading starts by confirming the chart.

How to Study Your Own Janam Kundli

If you want to read your own chart properly rather than rely on any reader, go in this order:

  1. Learn the 12 signs and their lords.
  2. Learn what each house governs; the guide to the 12 houses in kundli is a good base.
  3. Find your lagna and the lord of your lagna, and see where that lord sits.
  4. Learn your current mahadasha and what that planet rules in your chart.
  5. Only then look at yogas and doshas, which make sense once the basics do.

Keep a notebook of past events with dates and check them against your dasha list. Most people learn more from this than from any book.

Janam Kundli Milan from Old Patris

For a marriage match, families often have one patri on paper and one generated online, sometimes in different chart styles. Before you compare them, decode the paper one and enter its details into the same generator as the other, with the same settings. Then both charts are calculated the same way.

Gun milan in Hindi tables uses the Moon's nakshatra and sign, which the patri header usually states directly. If the header says one nakshatra and the regenerated chart says another, sort that out first, because every koota score depends on it. The full matching method is on our kundli milan page.

Janam Kundli Price: What You Pay For

Making a janam kundli is a calculation and costs nothing on most sites. What people pay for is the reading. I am not quoting a figure here because it changes; the current options are on the kundali analysis page. These are the things that set the price of any reading:

  • Whether it is a written report, a call, or both.
  • How many questions it covers.
  • Whether the birth time needs checking or rectifying first.
  • Whether divisional charts and a dasha timeline are included.
  • Who reads it, and how long they spend.

A low price usually means an auto-generated report with a person's name on it. Ask whether a person reads your chart before you pay.

What No Reader Can Tell You

No reader, human or software, can promise a marriage date, a job offer or a cure. A kundli shows tendencies and timing. Free will, effort and circumstance still decide outcomes.

Health questions belong with a doctor first. If a chart suggests a difficult period for health, that is a reason to get a check-up, not a diagnosis. The same goes for money: a chart can describe a period, but your financial decisions should rest on sound advice.

And be wary of any reader who uses a frightening dosha to sell an expensive remedy. A good reading leaves you clearer, not more anxious.
