⚡ Quick Answer — Nidhi Shrimali
An online astrology consultation for a Tamil or Kerala family works the same way as any other: you send your date, exact time and place of birth with your question, and the astrologer reads the chart remotely. What changes is the chart format, the star names, the panchangam and the matching method. Our consultations are in Hindi and English, not Tamil or Malayalam.

Who This Guide Is For
This guide is for readers in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and for Tamil and Malayali families living in other states or abroad, who are thinking about consulting an astrologer online. It explains what to check before you book with anyone, including us, so that the reading you receive matches the tradition your family follows.
I practise from Jodhpur in Rajasthan, in the North Indian tradition. A jathakam written in the southern style and a question framed in southern terms can still be read here, provided both sides know where the two traditions differ. The sections below go through those differences one by one.
Language First: Tamil, Malayalam, English or Hindi
Settle the language before anything else. A reading is useful only if you follow every sentence of it, and if the astrologer follows your question exactly.
My consultations and written answers are in Hindi and English. I do not consult in Tamil or Malayalam. If you or the elder who wants the reading is comfortable only in Tamil or Malayalam, please choose an astrologer who speaks your language. A translated reading passed along by a relative loses detail, and the detail is where the value lies.
If English works for you, the rest of this guide shows how to make an English consultation fit a southern chart and southern customs.
What Is the Same Everywhere
The foundation of Jyotish does not change with region. The twelve signs, nine grahas, twenty-seven nakshatras, twelve houses and the Vimshottari dasha system are common to a jyotishi in Jodhpur and a josiyar in Madurai. Both use the sidereal zodiac. Give the same birth details to both and the planets fall in the same signs.
The differences lie in presentation, vocabulary, the almanac used and a few methods of judgement. They are real, and you should know them, but they sit on top of a shared base. If you want to follow your own chart during a reading, my guide on how to read your kundli covers that base.
The South Indian Chart Format
The first thing a southern client notices in a northern report is that the chart looks wrong. It is the same chart drawn differently.
In the South Indian format, the signs are fixed in place. Meenam (Pisces) sits in the top-left box, and the signs run clockwise around the square. The lagna is marked in whichever box it falls, usually with a diagonal line or the letters "La". In the North Indian diamond format, the houses are fixed instead. The lagna is always the top centre diamond, and the sign numbers move.
Neither is more accurate. If you are used to the square chart, ask for the chart in that style, or ask the astrologer to name planets by sign and house in words so the drawing does not matter.
Star Names in Tamil and Malayalam
The nakshatras are the same twenty-seven everywhere, but several carry different names in the south. This causes more confusion than any other point, because families know their "star" by its regional name. Here are the ones that differ most.
| Sanskrit name | Tamil name | Malayalam name |
|---|---|---|
| Krittika | Karthigai | Karthika |
| Mrigashira | Mrigasirisham | Makayiram |
| Ardra | Thiruvathirai | Thiruvathira |
| Punarvasu | Punarpoosam | Punartham |
| Pushya | Poosam | Pooyam |
| Ashlesha | Ayilyam | Ayilyam |
| Hasta | Hastham | Atham |
| Swati | Swathi | Chothi |
| Anuradha | Anusham | Anizham |
| Jyeshtha | Kettai | Thrikketta |
| Shravana | Thiruvonam | Thiruvonam |
| Shatabhisha | Sathayam | Chathayam |
Spellings in English vary from family to family. When you fill in a form, write the star name as your family uses it. Any astrologer who works with southern clients will recognise it. The rasi names follow the same pattern: Mesham, Rishabam, Mithunam, Kadagam, Simmam, Kanni, Thulam, Viruchigam, Dhanusu, Makaram, Kumbam and Meenam in Tamil.
Vakya and Thirukanitha Panchangam
Tamil Nadu uses two kinds of almanac. The Vakya panchangam follows traditional formulae handed down over centuries. The Thirukanitha panchangam is computed from modern astronomical positions. The two can give different dates for a planet changing sign, sometimes weeks apart for slow planets such as Saturn. Many temples announce Sani Peyarchi and Guru Peyarchi by the Vakya date.
Computer-generated charts use calculated positions, most often with the Lahiri ayanamsa. If your family jathakam was cast by hand from a Vakya almanac, a planet near the edge of a sign may sit in the neighbouring sign in a computed chart. This is a known difference between methods. Mention at the start which almanac your family follows, and send a photo of the old jathakam if you have one, so that the two can be compared openly.
The calendars differ as well. Tamil and Malayalam months are solar, beginning when the Sun enters a sign. Much of north India counts lunar months. A birthday kept by star in the Tamil or Malayalam month will not fall on the same date as the English birthday.
Porutham and Gun Milan
Marriage matching is where the regional difference is widest. North Indian families use Ashtakoot gun milan, which scores eight factors out of 36 points. Tamil families check ten poruthams, among them Dina, Gana, Mahendra, Stree Deergha, Yoni, Rasi, Rasi Adhipathi, Vasya, Rajju and Vedha. Kerala follows a similar ten-porutham scheme. Rajju and Vedha are treated as especially serious in the south, and they have no direct equivalent in the 36-point score.
The two systems share several factors under different names, but they do not always reach the same verdict. If your family decides by porutham, a gun milan score alone will not answer the question your elders are asking. Say clearly which system you want checked. My article on kundli matching and gun milan explains the northern method, so you can see where the two overlap.
Astrologer Online Consultation in Kerala: Jathakam and Prasnam
Kerala has its own strong tradition. Alongside the birth chart (jathakam), Kerala astrologers are known for Prasnam, the art of answering a question from the chart of the moment it is asked. The classic text on it, Prasna Marga, was written in Kerala. In its traditional form an astrologer may use cowrie shells to arrive at the starting sign, and large questions about a family or a temple are examined through Ashtamangala Prasnam, an elaborate procedure conducted in person.
That in-person procedure cannot be reproduced on a phone call, and I do not perform it. What does work online is the principle behind it. A clear question is asked at a noted time and place, the chart for that moment is read, and it is weighed along with the birth chart. If you are in Kerala and want Ashtamangala Prasnam specifically, look for a practitioner in your district. If you want one question examined from your horoscope, that can be done from anywhere.
When One Question Is Enough
Many people who search for a consultation do not need a full life reading. They have one decision in front of them: whether to accept a transfer, when to list a property, whether a proposal is worth pursuing.
For that situation we have a service built around a single question. In Ask a Question, you send your birth details and one specific question, and I answer it in writing from your horoscope, using Prashna principles where the question calls for them. A written answer suits clients outside the Hindi belt, because you can read it at your own pace, reread it later, and share it with a parent without anything being lost in conversation.
Framing the question well matters. "Will my life improve?" cannot be answered usefully. "I have a job offer in Bengaluru that I must accept or decline by December; does my chart support a move in this period?" can. My list of questions to ask an astrologer gives more examples.
The Astrology Consultation Form: What It Asks
Whichever astrologer you choose, the consultation form will ask for much the same things. Have them ready before you start.
- Full name and gender.
- Date of birth in day, month, year. Write the month in words to avoid day-month confusion.
- Time of birth with AM or PM, and where the time came from: hospital record, birth certificate, or family memory.
- Place of birth: town, district, state and country. Small towns share names, so the district matters.
- Your question, with two or three lines of background.
- Preferred language and a phone or WhatsApp number.
- Optional: your star and rasi as your family knows them, and a photo of any existing jathakam.
A form that asks for none of the birth details, or asks for payment before telling you what you will receive, is a reason to pause.
Birth Time Details That Matter
The lagna changes roughly every two hours and the divisional charts change much faster, so the birth time carries a lot of weight. Three points come up often with southern and overseas births.
- Use the clock time of the birthplace. If you were born in Dubai, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, give the local time there, not Indian time. The software converts it.
- Time zones have changed. Singapore and Malaysia moved their standard time forward in 1982. Good software accounts for such changes, but tell the astrologer the year and place so it can be checked.
- Rounded times. "Around 6 in the morning" from family memory can be off by enough to shift the lagna. Say plainly how sure you are. An honest "approximate" lets the astrologer rely on the factors that do not depend on the exact minute.
Reading an Astrology Consultation Poster or Advert
Posters for astrology consultations hang outside temples, at bus stands and across social media. A poster is an advertisement, and you can judge a good deal from what it chooses to say.
A trustworthy one names the astrologer, states the method and the format (call, visit or written), and tells you how to find the fee. Be careful with posters that promise results: "100% solution", "love back in 24 hours", "guaranteed job abroad", or any removal of black magic for a fee. No chart can guarantee an outcome, and anyone printing such a promise is selling fear. Vague titles with no name behind them and a mobile number as the only detail deserve the same caution.
Best Astrologer for Consultation: Using Reddit Sensibly
People increasingly search Reddit for the best astrologer for consultation, hoping for opinions free of advertising. Forum threads can be useful, with some care.
- Recommendations are anonymous. You cannot tell a satisfied client from the astrologer's own cousin. Look at an account's history before trusting its praise.
- One person's good experience is a single reading. It says little about how your question will be handled.
- The most valuable posts describe the process: whether the astrologer asked for birth details properly, explained the reasoning, gave a time frame, and admitted what could not be known.
- Posts that describe pressure to buy costly remedies are worth taking seriously.
Use forums to build a shortlist, then judge each name yourself. I have set out the tests I would apply in how an online astrologer consultation works, and the low-cost ways to try someone out in talking to an astrologer for free.
Astrology Consultation for Horses and Other Animals
This question does arrive, usually from horse owners and breeders. An astrology consultation reads a human birth chart. A horse seldom has a birth time recorded to the minute, and the classical rules of interpretation were written for people, so I do not cast or read charts for animals.
What tradition does offer is muhurta, the choice of a suitable day for an action, and older almanacs include days considered good for buying and selling animals. An owner can also ask a question about a purchase or a business decision, which is then read from the owner's chart. I do not answer questions about race results or betting.
How to Book With Us
- Decide whether you have one question or want a full reading. For one question, open the Ask a Question page, where the current fee is shown.
- Fill in your birth details and write your question with its background.
- Add a note with your family's star name, the panchangam you follow, and whether you want the chart described in the South Indian format.
- Receive the written answer in English or Hindi on WhatsApp.
For a longer conversation covering career, marriage and health together, Kundali Vishleshan is the fuller reading by phone.
What a Consultation Cannot Do
A chart shows tendencies and periods. It does not fix outcomes, and no astrologer in any tradition can promise a job, a marriage date, a child or a recovery. For a health worry, see a doctor first and treat the reading as secondary. For a legal or money decision, take professional advice alongside it.
I should also be plain about my own limits. I read the birth chart from computed positions. I do not offer Nadi leaf reading, Ashtamangala Prasnam or readings on the Vakya system, and I do not consult in Tamil or Malayalam. If any of those is what your family needs, an astrologer rooted in that tradition will serve you better, and you should choose one without hesitation.
