Vastu Kaise Hota Hai: How Vastu Works

Vastu Shastra is the Indian tradition of planning a building around direction, light and the five elements. A Vastu check asks one question about each part of your home: does the activity in this spot suit the direction it sits in?

The tradition lays a grid, the Vastu Purusha Mandala, over the plot or the flat. Each part of the grid has a presiding deity and an element. The north-east belongs to water and to worship, the south-east to fire, the south-west to earth and weight, the north-west to air and movement, and the centre to open space.

From that grid come the familiar rules. Fire belongs in the south-east, so the kitchen goes there. Weight belongs in the south-west, so the owner's bedroom and the heavy almirah go there. Checking Vastu means comparing your actual home with this map and noting where they disagree.

The old texts were written for independent houses on open plots. A flat on the ninth floor is a different object, and a sensible check applies the principles to the home you live in.

Three Ways to Check Vastu

What You Need Before a Self-Check

If you have wondered "vastu check kaise kare", start by collecting four things:

• A floor plan. The builder's brochure plan works. If you have none, sketch each room as a box on plain paper, roughly to scale.
• A compass. A phone compass will do if you keep it away from metal and take more than one reading. I have described the method in the section on taking a trustworthy compass reading in our online Vastu consultant guide.
• The centre point. For a rectangular home, draw the two diagonals on the plan. They cross at the centre. An L-shaped home needs more care, because the missing corner matters.
• A pencil and twenty quiet minutes.

Stand at the centre point, find north, and draw it on the plan. Then divide the plan into nine boxes, three by three, and write the direction on each: NW, N, NE across the top if north is up, W, centre, E in the middle, SW, S, SE along the bottom. You now have your own home on the Vastu map.

The Ten-Point Vastu Self-Check

Go through these ten points with the marked plan in your hand. Tick each one that matches.

This list covers the points on which almost every Vastu school agrees. An expert checks many more, including the exact segment of the wall in which the door falls, slopes, cuts and extensions of the plot, and the surroundings.

Reading Your Result

Very few homes tick all ten. Flats in particular are designed around plumbing shafts and parking grids, and a score of six or seven is ordinary.

The count matters less than which points you missed. I read a self-check in this order:

1. North-east, centre and south-west first. A blocked or dirty north-east, a loaded centre and an empty south-west are the three faults I would address before anything else.
2. Fire and water next. A kitchen in the north-east, or a toilet there, deserves attention.
3. Then the door. You cannot move it in most homes. You can keep it clean, bright and free of clutter.
4. Everything else last. Sleeping direction, puja placement and furniture are quick changes. Make them and move on.

Vastu Online Apps: What They Do Well and Badly

A Vastu online app usually bundles three tools: a compass, a grid that overlays your uploaded floor plan with the 8 or 16 zones, and a library of room-by-room tips.

Where an app helps:

• It draws the zone lines on your plan faster and more neatly than you can by hand.
• It gives you a compass and a checklist in one place.
• It teaches the vocabulary, so you follow what an expert says later.

Where an app falls short:

• The compass is your phone's sensor. Steel in the slab, a fridge or a car nearby throws it off, and the app cannot tell.
• The grid is only as good as the centre point and the north you gave it. A few degrees of error moves a door from one zone to the next.
• It treats each rule as equal. A shoe rack in the north-east and a toilet in the north-east are both flagged red.
• It knows nothing about your building: the lift shaft behind the wall, the neighbour's water tank, the fact that you rent.
• Many apps sell remedies. A tool that finds a fault and sells the cure in the same screen has a reason to find faults.

Use an app for drawing and learning. Take its verdicts as a list of things to look at.

Online Vastu Check Tools and Scores

Search for "vastu online check" and you will find calculators that ask for your facing and room positions and return a percentage. No classical text gives a scoring formula, so each site invents its own weights. The same flat can score 55 on one site and 80 on another.

A score is useful in one way: for comparing two flats on the same tool before you shortlist. It tells you little about a single home in isolation. If a calculator gives your home a low number, look at which items lowered it, compare them with the ten-point list above, and ignore the figure.

Mistakes People Make in a Self-Check

• Getting the facing wrong. A home's facing is the direction you look towards when you stand in the main doorway looking out. Many people take the direction they face while entering, which is the opposite.
• Using the building gate. For a flat, check your own front door and your own floor plan. The society's main gate is a separate question.
• Trusting one compass reading. Take it at the centre and at two other spots. If they differ by more than a few degrees, something magnetic is nearby.
• Calling north-north-east "north". Plots are seldom square to the compass. Write the degrees down.
• Counting the balcony in or out at random. Decide once whether covered balconies are part of the plan, and stay consistent.
• Mixing Vastu and feng shui. Wind chimes, laughing Buddhas and the fish that readers ask about in our piece on fish statues for the home come from another system.
• Panicking. A single mismatch does not curse a house.

Vastu Kaise Sikhe: Learning It Yourself

If you want to learn Vastu beyond a checklist, go in this order.

Start with your own home. Do the self-check above, then repeat it for two relatives' homes. Three real plans teach more than thirty videos.

Read a translation of a source text. The classical works include the Mayamata, the Manasara, the Samarangana Sutradhara, the Vishwakarma Prakash, and the Vastu chapter of Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita. They are technical and deal with temples, towns and timber as much as houses. Reading even one shows you how much of today's popular advice is later addition.

Then consider a course. Vastu has no single licensing body in India, so judge a course by its content. A sound one teaches compass work and plan reading on real drawings, covers the mandala and the door positions in detail, and makes you practise on case plans. Be wary of any course built mainly around selling remedy products or a franchise.

Learn to read drawings. Basic architectural plan reading, scale and orientation matter as much as the shastra.

When to Call a Vastu Expert Online

A self-check is enough for curiosity about a home you already live in. Bring in a Vastu expert online in these situations:

• You are about to buy a plot or flat and want it checked before you pay the token.
• You are building or renovating, and walls, plumbing and the door can still move on paper.
• Your self-check found a major mismatch, such as a toilet or kitchen in the north-east, and you need a fix that avoids demolition.
• The plot or flat has an irregular shape, a cut corner or an extension.
• Two sources gave you opposite advice.
• You run a shop, clinic or office where layout affects daily work.

Whichever you choose, do your own ten-point check first. You will ask better questions, and you will know at once whether the person has studied your plan.

3. Which of my home's faults matter most, and which can I leave?
4. Can each correction be done without breaking walls?
5. Do you sell the remedy items you recommend?
6. Will I get the recommendations in writing?
7. What will this consultation not be able to tell me?

The fifth question matters. An adviser who earns from pyramids and strips has a reason to prescribe them. A clear answer to the seventh is a good sign.

What a Vastu Check Cannot Tell You

A Vastu check describes how a building is arranged. It does not explain every difficulty in the lives of the people inside, and correcting a layout does not guarantee money, health, marriage or peace at home.

It also replaces no professional. Damp, cracks and wiring belong to an engineer. Illness belongs to a doctor, and that includes poor sleep or low mood that someone has blamed on a bedroom direction. Loans and losses belong to a financial adviser. Vastu can sit alongside each of these.

And it should not frighten you out of a good home. If a house suits your family, your budget and your commute, a few mismatches on a checklist are a reason to adjust the furniture.
