⚡ Quick Answer — Nidhi Shrimali
A Vastu consultant studies the directions and layout of a home, office or plot and suggests changes so each activity sits in its traditional zone. Online, this works from a floor plan, compass readings and photos you send, followed by a call and written suggestions. Most corrections need no demolition. Site conditions like slope or soil still need someone on the ground.

What a Vastu Consultant Does
If you have searched "Vastu consultant, what is it", the short version is this: a Vastu consultant reads a building the way an astrologer reads a chart. Vastu Shastra divides a space into directional zones, each associated with an element and a deity, and holds that certain activities belong in certain zones. The kitchen belongs with fire in the south-east, the heavy master bedroom in the south-west, worship and open space in the north-east, and so on.
The consultant's work is to map your actual property onto that framework, find where the two disagree, and suggest the least disruptive way to bring them closer. That last part matters. Almost no modern home is perfect by Vastu, and a good consultant ranks the mismatches by importance instead of handing you a list of forty problems.
Can Vastu Really Be Checked Online?
For most homes and offices, yes. What Vastu analysis needs is the shape of the property, the position of each room, the location of the entrance, and the directions. A floor plan plus accurate compass readings provides all four. In many cases a plan is actually easier to analyse than walking through rooms, because the whole layout is visible at once and the grid can be drawn over it precisely.
Online works less well when the question is about the land itself: the slope of a plot, the soil, what lies on the neighbouring plots, a nearby temple, a high-tension line or a water body. Photos and a description help, but someone on site sees these better. If you are buying land, say so at the start so that limitation is discussed honestly.
Online Consultation vs Site Visit
| Question | Online works well? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Room placement in an existing home or flat | Yes | A plan and compass readings show everything needed |
| Office or shop layout, seating, cash counter | Yes | Same as above, plus photos of the space |
| Choosing between two or three flats to buy | Yes | Builder brochures usually include plans; directions can be confirmed on a visit |
| Plan for a house not yet built | Yes | The architect's drawing is the best possible input |
| Plot slope, soil, surroundings | Partly | Photos and video help, but levels are hard to judge remotely |
| Factory with complex machinery layout | Partly | Possible with a detailed plan; a site visit adds confidence |
What to Send: Plan, Directions, Photos
The quality of an online Vastu reading depends on what you send. In order of usefulness:
- A floor plan. An architect's drawing, a builder's brochure page or the plan from your sale papers. If you have none, a hand sketch on squared paper is fine; mark each room, the main door, windows, toilets, the kitchen stove and the staircase.
- North marked on the plan, from your own compass reading (see the next section), not from the brochure's arrow, which is sometimes approximate.
- Photos of the main entrance from inside and outside, and of anything you are worried about.
- Where the water sources are: underground tank, overhead tank, borewell.
- What prompted the consultation. A new purchase, a renovation, a problem the family links to the house. This decides which part of the plan gets the most attention.
If you cannot produce a plan, the consultation can still go ahead. If there is no plan, I guide people through describing the layout room by room during the call.
Taking a Compass Reading That Can Be Trusted
Wrong directions ruin a Vastu reading more often than anything else. Phone compass apps work, but they are easily thrown off. A few habits make the reading reliable:
- Calibrate the phone first. Most compass apps ask you to move the phone in a figure-of-eight.
- Keep away from metal. Steel almirahs, the fridge, iron grills, the car and even a metal table will pull the needle. Stand clear by a metre or two.
- Take readings in three or four places: the centre of the home, just inside the main door, and in one or two rooms. If they disagree by more than a few degrees, something metallic is interfering.
- Hold the phone flat and parallel to a wall, then note which way that wall faces.
- Write down degrees, not just "north-east". A door at 40° and a door at 65° are both loosely north-east but fall in different Vastu zones.
How the Plan Is Read
Once the plan and north are fixed, the property is divided into a grid. The centre, the Brahmasthan, is traditionally kept open and light. Around it the space is divided into the eight main directions, and in finer analysis into sixteen zones, because the difference between north and north-north-east matters for things like the main door.
Irregular shapes are noted next. A cut or missing corner, especially in the north-east or south-west, and an extended corner, are given particular weight because they change the balance of the whole plan. Then each room, door and water source is checked against its zone.
The result is a ranked list: what matters most in this particular home, what is minor, and what can safely be ignored. The general principles behind each zone are explained in our complete guide to Vastu for the home.
What Gets Checked, Room by Room
- Main entrance: its direction and exact zone, and what faces it.
- Kitchen: the room's zone and the stove's position and facing. Kitchen placement has its own guide on kitchen Vastu.
- Master bedroom: ideally south-west, with head direction while sleeping.
- Puja space: north-east preferred, and never under a staircase or sharing a wall with a toilet.
- Toilets and bathrooms: their position relative to the north-east and the centre.
- Water: underground storage in the north or north-east, overhead tanks in the south-west.
- Staircase: its location and turning direction.
- Heavy furniture and storage: weight in the south and west, lightness in the north and east.
- For offices: owner's seat, cash locker, reception and staff seating. See office Vastu tips for the detail.
Corrections Without Demolition
Most people booking a Vastu consultation are not going to break walls, and they should not be asked to. Most corrections fall into a few practical groups:
- Use of rooms. Swapping which room is the bedroom and which is the study often fixes more than any object can.
- Placement. Moving the bed, the stove's facing, the desk, the cash box or heavy cupboards.
- Colour and light. Paint and lighting matched to the elements of each zone.
- Keeping zones clear: a clutter-free north-east, an open centre.
- Symbolic correctives such as a Vastu yantra, metal strips or pyramids for defects that cannot be changed physically.
Be clear about what symbolic correctives are. They are the traditional way of addressing a defect you cannot remove, and many families find them meaningful. They are not a structural fix, and a good consultant will always prefer moving a function to a better zone over selling an object.
Flats, Rented Homes and Offices
In an apartment, you control the inside of your flat, not the building's orientation or the position of the lift shaft. The consultation focuses on what is yours to change: room use, furniture, the stove, the bed, the puja corner.
In rented homes, the suggestions should be reversible. Nothing that needs a landlord's permission or leaves marks. Placement and room use usually do most of the work.
Offices and shops get a different emphasis: where the owner sits and faces, where cash is kept, where customers enter, and where staff sit. For commercial premises our guide to Vastu for business gives the principles.
Checking a Plot or Flat Before You Buy
The cheapest moment for Vastu is before the purchase. Once you own the property, the plan is fixed. Before it, you can compare options.
If you are choosing between two or three flats, send the plans of each with the direction of the main door. The useful question is comparative: which of these is the better fit, and what would each need? For a plot, add photos of the four sides, the road, and anything notable nearby, and mention which way the land slopes. For a house you are about to build, send the architect's drawing before construction starts, when changing a line on paper costs nothing.
Vastu Consultant Near Me: Does Distance Matter?
Searching "Vastu consultant near me" is natural; people assume the consultant must visit. For an existing home or flat, distance matters very little, for the reasons above. What matters is that the directions you send are accurate and the consultant explains the reasoning behind each suggestion.
A local visit is worth arranging when land conditions are the main question, when a large site such as a factory has many buildings, or when the family simply feels more comfortable having someone walk through the property. Many people do both: an online analysis of the plan first, and a local person to check site conditions.
Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Kota and Other Rajasthan Cities
We are based in Jodhpur and many of our Vastu consultations come from across Rajasthan, all done remotely. Searches like "Vastu consultant in Jaipur", "in Udaipur", "in Bikaner" or "in Bhilwara" often come from people who do not realise the consultation can be done from a plan and a phone call. A few situations come up often in the state:
- Older homes in walled-city areas of Jodhpur, Jaipur, Bikaner and Udaipur often sit on irregular plots, with shared walls and rooms added over generations. The plan is usually hand-sketched, and cut corners are common, so the compass work matters even more.
- Homes built around a courtyard keep the centre open, which is in line with the Brahmasthan principle. Later additions that roof over the courtyard change that.
- Rooftop water tanks are almost universal, and their position on the roof is one of the first things to check.
- Kota brings many questions about students' study rooms and desk direction.
- Bhiwadi and other industrial areas bring factory and warehouse layouts, where the owner's cabin, machinery weight and dispatch area are the main points.
Wherever you are, the Vastu consultancy works the same way: plan, directions, a call, then written recommendations.
Vastu Consultant Fees: What Affects Them
When people search "Vastu consultant near me with fees", they find a wide range. The difference usually comes from:
- Property type and size: a two-room flat, a large bungalow, an office floor and a factory are different jobs.
- Online or site visit: a visit adds travel time and cost.
- Deliverables: a verbal consultation, or a written report with marked diagrams.
- Follow-up: whether a review after you make changes is included.
- Separate properties: home and office are generally two consultations.
We do not hardcode fees in articles. The current fee for our consultation is on the Vastu consultancy page. A useful check for any consultant: is the fee stated before booking, and is product buying kept separate from the advice?
Choosing a Vastu Consultant
Signs of a careful consultant:
- Asks for the plan and accurate directions before giving any opinion.
- Explains why each suggestion is made, in terms of the zone and element.
- Ranks problems by importance instead of listing everything.
- Prefers changes in room use and placement over objects.
- Says plainly when a defect is minor and can be left alone.
Be cautious if someone diagnoses serious "dosha" from a single photo, insists on demolition for a minor issue, attributes every illness or loss in the family to the house, or makes the advice depend on buying expensive items from them.
What Vastu Cannot Do
Vastu is a traditional framework for arranging space. It can make a home feel more ordered and calm, and many families value it for that. It cannot guarantee profit, cure illness, secure a marriage or remove a legal problem, and no consultant should promise it will.
If someone in the family is unwell, including with depression or anxiety, see a doctor first. Vastu suggestions can sit alongside treatment, never in place of it. If the building itself has real problems like dampness, cracks or poor ventilation, a structural engineer or architect comes before any Vastu correction. And where a business is losing money, an accountant's review comes first; a change of seating direction will not fix the books.
How Our Online Vastu Consultation Works
- Book a slot on the Vastu consultancy page for one property: home, office, shop or plot.
- Share the floor plan or a sketch with north marked, plus photos. If you have no plan, I will guide you through the layout on the call.
- A 45-minute call in which I go through the directions, elements and each room, and answer your questions.
- Room-by-room recommendations focused on changes you can make without structural work.
- A Vastu report with diagrams shared on WhatsApp, so you can implement the changes at your own pace.
- Follow-up on WhatsApp once you have made the changes, if you want them reviewed.
Where a yantra or other corrective is suggested, it is suggested for a specific defect you cannot change physically, never as a substitute for the placement advice.
