⚡ Quick Answer — Nidhi Shrimali
Each rudraksha mukhi is linked with a planet in astrological practice: 1 mukhi with the Sun, 2 with the Moon, 3 with Mars, 4 with Mercury, 5 with Jupiter, 6 with Venus, 7 with Saturn, 8 with Rahu and 9 with Ketu. Twelve mukhi is also the Sun's, 13 Venus's and 14 Saturn's. Ten and eleven mukhi have no single planet.

Planet to Rudraksha: The Full Table
Most charts list beads by mukhi. This one starts from the planet, because that is how the question comes up in a reading: "My Saturn is troubling me, so which rudraksha?"
| Planet (graha) | Rudraksha | Presiding deity of the bead | Usual day to begin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun (Surya) | 1 mukhi; 12 mukhi | Shiva; Surya | Sunday |
| Moon (Chandra) | 2 mukhi | Ardhanarishvara | Monday |
| Mars (Mangal) | 3 mukhi | Agni | Tuesday |
| Mercury (Budh) | 4 mukhi | Brahma | Wednesday |
| Jupiter (Guru) | 5 mukhi | Kalagni Rudra | Thursday or Monday |
| Venus (Shukra) | 6 mukhi; 13 mukhi | Kartikeya; Kamadeva | Friday |
| Saturn (Shani) | 7 mukhi; 14 mukhi | Mahalakshmi; Hanuman / Shiva | Saturday |
| Rahu | 8 mukhi | Ganesha | Saturday or Wednesday |
| Ketu | 9 mukhi | Durga | Tuesday or Thursday |
| No single planet | 10 mukhi; 11 mukhi | Vishnu; Hanuman (Ekadash Rudra) | Monday |
These are the links we follow in our own listings and readings. You will find small differences between teachers, and the next section explains why.
Where the Planet Links Come From
It is worth knowing what is scripture and what is later practice.
The Shiva Purana, in the Vidyeshvara Samhita, describes beads of one to fourteen mukhi. For each it names a presiding deity and the merit of wearing it. It does not assign planets. The Padma Purana and the Rudraksha Jabala Upanishad follow the same pattern: deities, not grahas.
The planet links were added by astrologers over time. Some follow from the deity: twelve-mukhi belongs to Surya, so it goes to the Sun. Others follow the order of the planets, running one to nine. Because this layer is practice and not text, lists differ. Some teachers give thirteen-mukhi to the Moon as well as Venus, some link fourteen-mukhi with Mars, and some say ten or eleven mukhi "pacifies all nine planets".
I mention this so you can read any seller's chart with a clear head. A mapping that differs from ours is not automatically wrong. A seller who says the Purana itself assigns planets is.
Sun: 1 Mukhi and 12 Mukhi
Two beads are tied to the Sun. One-mukhi is Shiva's own bead and the round form is so rare that it is hardly ever genuine in the market. The traded one-mukhi is the half-moon shape, a different botanical form.
For practical purposes, twelve-mukhi is the Sun's bead. Its deity is Surya himself. It is suggested when the Sun is weak or afflicted in the chart: trouble with authority, a strained relationship with the father, or a lack of confidence in a leadership role. The twelve-mukhi wearing guide covers the method.
Moon: 2 Mukhi
Two-mukhi belongs to Ardhanarishvara, the joined form of Shiva and Parvati, and is linked with the Moon. The Moon in a chart stands for the mind, the mother and emotional steadiness. Two-mukhi is traditionally suggested for a restless mind and for harmony between partners.
A caution belongs here. Persistent low mood, anxiety, panic or sleeplessness are medical matters. See a doctor first. A bead can be part of your prayer alongside treatment; it is not a treatment. For buying this bead, see the two-mukhi buying guide.
Mars: 3 Mukhi
Three-mukhi is Agni's bead and is linked with Mars. Mars governs drive, courage, property and siblings, and when it is troubled the usual signs are a short temper and haste. Three-mukhi is the traditional rudraksha for Mars, and it is often suggested to people with Manglik placements as a gentle support.
Karungali (ebony) is also marketed for Mars these days. That is a separate South Indian tradition, and the rudraksha vs karungali comparison sets the two side by side.
4 Mukhi Rudraksha: Which Planet?
Four-mukhi rudraksha is for Mercury (Budh). Its deity is Brahma, the source of knowledge, and Mercury is the planet of speech, learning, calculation and trade. The two fit together easily, which is why four-mukhi is the bead most often given to students, teachers, writers and people in commerce.
It is suggested when Mercury is weak, combust or placed with a malefic, and during a Mercury dasha that is not going well. It will not replace study or practice. It is worn as a support for focus.
5 Mukhi Rudraksha: Which Planet?
Five-mukhi rudraksha is for Jupiter (Guru or Brihaspati). Its deity is Kalagni Rudra, a form of Shiva. Jupiter stands for wisdom, teachers, children, faith and good counsel.
Five-mukhi is also the one bead tradition treats as suitable for everyone. You do not need a weak Jupiter to wear it. This is why japa malas are made of five-mukhi beads, and why I suggest it as the starting point for anyone new to rudraksha. See the five-mukhi rudraksha listing for the single bead.
6 Mukhi Rudraksha: Which Planet?
Six-mukhi rudraksha is for Venus (Shukra). Its deity is Kartikeya, the six-faced son of Shiva. Venus governs relationships, comfort, the arts and vehicles. Six-mukhi is suggested when Venus is weak or afflicted, which often shows as strain in relationships or little satisfaction from what one has.
Thirteen-mukhi, Kamadeva's bead, is the other Venus bead. It is far rarer and costlier. For most people who need a Venus bead, six-mukhi is the sensible choice.
7 Mukhi Rudraksha: Which Planet?
Seven-mukhi rudraksha is for Saturn (Shani). Its deity is Mahalakshmi, and some traditions also connect it with the seven sages. Saturn governs discipline, delay, labour and long effort.
This is the bead most often asked for during Sade Sati, Dhaiya or a hard Saturn dasha. People wear it for steadiness through a slow period, and because of the Lakshmi link, for stability in earnings. It does not shorten Saturn's period or remove its lessons. The seven-mukhi wearing guide gives the full method. Fourteen-mukhi is also linked with Saturn, but it is a rare and expensive bead that I suggest only after a chart reading.
8 Mukhi Rudraksha: Which Planet?
Eight-mukhi rudraksha is for Rahu. Its deity is Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Rahu is a shadow planet tied to sudden change, confusion, obsession and things foreign. A troubled Rahu often shows as repeated obstacles that appear without clear cause.
Eight-mukhi is suggested during a difficult Rahu dasha or when Rahu sits badly with the Moon or the Sun. It is less common than the lower mukhis, so check it carefully and ask for an X-ray report if the price is high.
Ketu: 9 Mukhi
Nine-mukhi belongs to Durga in her nine forms and is linked with Ketu. Ketu stands for detachment, sudden breaks and the spiritual pull away from worldly things. A troubled Ketu can show as aimlessness or fear without a clear object. Nine-mukhi is worn for courage, and many devotees of the Goddess wear it during Navratri regardless of their chart.
10 and 11 Mukhi: Beads Without a Planet
Ten-mukhi belongs to Vishnu and eleven-mukhi to Hanuman and the eleven Rudras. Neither has a single planet in the common scheme. Tradition describes ten-mukhi as protective in a general way, and eleven-mukhi as a bead for courage and for those on a path of devotion or yoga.
You will see them sold as beads that "balance all nine planets". Treat that as a way of saying they are not tied to one. If a specific planet is your concern, choose that planet's bead.
When the Planet Link Actually Matters
For most wearers, it does not. If you want to wear rudraksha out of devotion, five-mukhi is enough and no planet needs to be consulted.
The planet link matters when:
- a planet is weak, combust, debilitated or badly placed in your birth chart and its themes are showing up in your life;
- you are running the mahadasha or antardasha of a difficult planet (the mahadasha guide explains how to find yours);
- Saturn's Sade Sati or a Rahu-Ketu transit is pressing on your Moon.
In each case the planet has to be identified from the chart, not guessed from symptoms. "I am angry, so it must be Mars" is wrong as often as it is right. A kundali analysis names the planet first, and only then is a bead worth choosing.
Rudraksha or Gemstone for the Same Planet?
Both are used for planets, but they are understood to work differently.
- A gemstone strengthens a planet. That helps when the planet is a well-wisher in your chart and weak. It can hurt when the planet rules difficult houses, because you are amplifying it. Blue sapphire for Saturn is the well-known example.
- A rudraksha is worn to pacify. Tradition does not treat any mukhi as harmful to the wearer. That is why rudraksha is the safer suggestion when a planet is troublesome and you do not want to strengthen it.
So for a Saturn that harms the chart, I would suggest seven-mukhi long before a neelam. The guide to choosing a gemstone explains the gemstone side of this decision.
Which Day to Start Wearing
The table above gives the weekday of each planet. Monday, Shiva's day, is acceptable for any rudraksha, so use it if the planet's own day is not convenient. For Rahu and Ketu, which have no weekday, teachers differ; the days in the table are the common conventions.
Wash the bead in clean water, place it before Shiva, repeat "Om Namah Shivaya" 108 times or as many as you can with attention, and wear it. Each mukhi has its own seed mantra in the Purana, but "Om Namah Shivaya" is accepted for all of them.
You can wear beads for two planets together. Rudraksha beads are not held to clash with one another the way some gemstones do. If you are deciding among several, the overview of all rudraksha types shows the whole range from 1 to 21 mukhi.
What the Planet Link Cannot Promise
A bead does not move a planet, cancel a dasha or guarantee a result. Wearing seven-mukhi does not end Sade Sati early. Wearing six-mukhi does not guarantee a marriage. What tradition offers is a support for steadiness and prayer during a difficult period.
For health, money and legal trouble, the doctor, the financial adviser and the lawyer come first. The bead sits alongside their advice.
Every bead from 1 to 14 mukhi is listed by mukhi and origin in our rudraksha collection. If your chart has not been read, start there before you choose a planet's bead.
