How Many Types of Rudraksha? 1 to 21 Mukhi Explained

How many types and faces of rudraksha exist, what each mukhi from 1 to 21 is linked with, how many beads to wear, and which mukhi suits you.

9 October 2026 13 min read|By Nidhi Shrimali

⚡ Quick Answer — Nidhi Shrimali

Rudraksha is grouped by mukhi, the natural lines running from top to bottom of the bead. The Shiva Purana describes 1 to 14 mukhi. Sellers today list beads up to 21 mukhi, plus special forms such as Gauri Shankar and Ganesh. There is no single "best" face. Five-mukhi is the common choice that suits almost everyone, and other mukhis are picked for a planet or purpose.

How Many Types of Rudraksha Are There?

It depends on how you count. Three different groupings get mixed together, and most confusion comes from that.

  • By mukhi: the main system. Beads are counted by the number of natural lines. The Shiva Purana (Vidyeshvara Samhita) names fourteen, from one to fourteen mukhi. The market today sells up to twenty-one, and dealers report rarer counts above that.
  • By form: beads that are joined or shaped differently, such as Gauri Shankar (two beads grown together) and Ganesh (a bead with a trunk-like bump). These are counted as types of their own.
  • By origin: Nepal, Indonesia (often called Java) and India. This is a trade grouping, not a spiritual one. The same five-mukhi bead from Nepal and from Indonesia is still a five-mukhi bead.

So if someone says there are "14 types", they are following the Purana. If they say "21 types", they are following the modern market. Both are describing the same system; one is simply longer.

What a Mukhi (Face) Is

"Mukhi" means face or mouth. On a rudraksha it is a line, or groove, that runs from the top of the bead (where the stalk was) to the bottom. Count the lines and you have the mukhi.

The lines are not decoration. Each one marks a seed chamber inside the bead. A genuine five-mukhi bead has five chambers. This match between the outside and the inside is what the whole mukhi system rests on, and it is also how fakes are caught: a carved bead shows lines that do not match its chambers. The rudraksha and bhadraksha guide explains how lookalike beads are carved to pass as rarer mukhis.

Some lines are hard to see, especially on small or oiled beads. Count them in daylight with a magnifier, following each line all the way round.

How Many Faces Can a Rudraksha Have?

In nature, one to roughly twenty-one mukhi is the range you will see offered, and a few dealers handle beads above that. How often each count appears falls off sharply as the number rises.

  • Very common: five-mukhi, by a wide margin. This is why five-mukhi malas are affordable.
  • Common: two, three, four, six and seven.
  • Less common: eight to fourteen. Prices rise steeply through this range.
  • Rare: fifteen to twenty-one, especially in larger Nepali beads.
  • Rarest: the round one-mukhi, which most experienced dealers say they have never handled.

When someone asks "rudraksha how many face is best", the honest first answer is that the number of faces sets rarity and price, not how much good the bead does you.

1 to 21 Mukhi at a Glance

The deity and planet links below are the ones we follow in our listings. For 1 to 14 mukhi they come from Purana and long practice. For 15 to 21 mukhi they come from later dealer and devotional tradition, and you will see variations between sellers.

One and twelve mukhi are both linked with the Sun, six and thirteen with Venus, and seven and fourteen with Saturn. Where two beads share a planet, the deity and purpose usually decide which one is suggested.

The One-Mukhi Problem

One-mukhi is the bead people ask about most and the one I am most careful with. The round one-mukhi described in texts is so rare that you should assume any round "ek mukhi" offered to you is carved, unless a lab has X-rayed it.

The one-mukhi bead actually traded is half-moon or cashew-shaped (kaju dana), mostly from South India. It is a different botanical form. Many people wear it with devotion, and that is their choice, but buy it knowing what it is. If a seller offers a round one-mukhi at an ordinary price, walk away.

2 to 9 Mukhi: The Everyday Range

These are the beads most households actually wear.

  • Two-mukhi is linked with the Moon and with Ardhanarishvara, so it is often worn for harmony between partners. The two-mukhi buying guide covers it in detail.
  • Three-mukhi is Agni's bead and linked with Mars. It is the bead tradition gives for Mars, not coral or karungali.
  • Four-mukhi is Brahma's, linked with Mercury, and often given to students.
  • Five-mukhi is Kalagni Rudra's and linked with Jupiter. It is the general bead for daily wear and japa.
  • Six-mukhi belongs to Kartikeya and Venus.
  • Seven-mukhi is Mahalakshmi's and linked with Saturn, which is why it is suggested during difficult Saturn periods. See how to wear seven-mukhi rudraksha.
  • Eight-mukhi is Ganesha's and linked with Rahu.
  • Nine-mukhi is Durga's and linked with Ketu.

10 to 14 Mukhi

Ten-mukhi belongs to Vishnu and is not tied to one planet; it is traditionally described as protective. Eleven-mukhi is linked with Hanuman and the eleven Rudras. Twelve-mukhi is the Sun's bead, usually worn by people whose work asks for authority; the twelve-mukhi wearing guide goes through the method. Thirteen-mukhi is Kamadeva's. Fourteen-mukhi, sometimes called Deva Mani, is linked with Hanuman and Shiva and with Saturn.

Fourteen is where the Shiva Purana list ends. Beads in this range are expensive enough that I always suggest checking the chart, and checking the bead, before buying.

15 to 21 Mukhi

Beads above fourteen mukhi are not described in the Shiva Purana list. Their deities and purposes come from later devotional tradition and dealers, and they vary from seller to seller. Fifteen is often linked with Pashupatinath and twenty-one with Kubera, for example, but you will see other attributions.

These beads are rare, and that makes them the main target for carving and gluing. I would not buy one without an X-ray report from a lab. I would also be wary of anyone who says a high-mukhi bead is "more powerful" in a general sense. Rarer is not the same as better suited to you.

Gauri Shankar, Ganesh, Garbh Gauri and Trijuti

These are counted as types because of their shape rather than their mukhi count.

  • Gauri Shankar: two beads naturally grown together, linked with Shiva and Parvati. It is usually kept in the puja room or worn for harmony in marriage. See our Gauri Shankar rudraksha.
  • Garbh Gauri: a joined pair where one bead is clearly smaller, read as mother and child.
  • Trijuti (Gaurishankar-Ganesh): three beads joined. Very rare.
  • Ganesh: a single bead with a raised bump like a trunk. See the Ganesh rudraksha listing.

Joined beads are easy to fake with glue. Look closely at the join: a natural one has continuous texture across it.

Nepal, Indonesia and India

Nepali beads are usually larger, with deep and clear mukhi lines. Indonesian beads are smaller and smoother, with finer lines, and they are often used in malas because they are light. Indian beads come from a few regions and vary.

Origin changes the price and the look, not the mukhi. A five-mukhi bead is a five-mukhi bead whether it comes from Nepal or Java. Some people prefer Nepali beads because the lines are easier to count and check, and that is a practical reason, not a spiritual one.

Does Size Matter?

The Shiva Purana grades rudraksha by size: a bead the size of an amla is called best, one the size of a ber fruit middling, and one the size of a gram seed the least. It also prefers beads that are firm, well-formed and free of thorns or insect holes.

In practice, a small, sound, genuine bead is far better than a large, cracked one. A large size also makes high-mukhi beads easier to fake convincingly, so do not pay extra for size alone.

How Many Beads Should You Wear?

This is the other "how many" question people ask.

  • A single bead on a thread or in a pendant is enough. Most people who wear a specific mukhi for a planet wear one bead.
  • A japa mala has 108 beads plus one extra, the sumeru or guru bead, which you do not cross while counting. Smaller malas of 54+1 or 27+1 are also used.
  • A kantha (a short necklace of larger beads) usually has 32 or 36 beads, though counts vary.
  • Bracelets carry as many beads as fit the wrist; there is no fixed count.

The Purana also gives large counts for beads worn on the head, arms and chest. Those describe the dress of renunciates, not what a householder needs. For daily japa, a five-mukhi mala is the usual choice.

Which Mukhi Is Best?

There is no best face for everyone. There is a sensible default and then a reason-based choice.

The default is five-mukhi. Tradition treats it as suitable for anyone, at any age, without a chart reading. If you just want to start wearing rudraksha, start here.

A different mukhi makes sense when there is a reason: a planet that troubles you in your chart, a dasha you are going through, or a specific devotion. That is where a reading helps, because the right bead for Saturn trouble is not the right bead for a weak Moon. A kundali analysis will tell you whether you need a particular mukhi at all, and often the answer is that five-mukhi is enough.

Wearing Several Mukhis Together

Unlike gemstones, rudraksha beads are not considered to clash. Many people wear a five-mukhi mala with one other mukhi as a pendant, and there are malas built from one of each mukhi.

Keep it simple, though. A bead you wear and remember is more useful than seven you are not sure about. If you are combining rudraksha with a gemstone, have the chart checked first, because the gemstone is the part that carries the risk.

Checking What You Bought

Before you rely on a bead:

  • Count the lines in daylight and make sure each runs unbroken from top to bottom.
  • Look for fresh-looking grooves, glue at joins, or a surface that looks too smooth or freshly dyed.
  • For anything above seven mukhi, or any joined bead, ask for an X-ray report.
  • Do not rely on the floating test or the "turns between two coins" test. Neither proves anything.

The guide to identifying an original five-mukhi covers the hand checks, and readers in Hindi can turn to रुद्राक्ष के प्रकार और फायदे. Every bead in our rudraksha collection is listed by mukhi and origin.

What Rudraksha Cannot Do

Rudraksha is a traditional aid to prayer and practice. It does not guarantee wealth, marriage, children, a job or recovery from illness, and a higher mukhi does not guarantee more.

For any health concern, including blood pressure, anxiety, sleep trouble or depression, see a doctor first. A bead can stay part of your daily prayer while you follow treatment; it is not a substitute for it.
