⚡ Quick Answer — Nidhi Shrimali
Pukhraj stone is natural yellow sapphire, the gem of Jupiter (Guru) in Vedic astrology. Astrologers suggest it when Jupiter helps your lagna but sits weak in the chart, for matters of learning, marriage, children and steady growth. An original pukhraj is natural corundum, and only a gem lab report can confirm that. No stone guarantees a result.

What Pukhraj Stone Is
Pukhraj is the Hindi name for yellow sapphire. A gemmologist calls it yellow corundum: aluminium oxide, coloured by a trace of iron. Ruby and blue sapphire are the same mineral in other colours, which explains why all three wear so well in a daily ring. Corundum sits at 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, one step below diamond.
You will meet the stone under several names. Sanskrit texts call it pushparaga. In Tamil it is pushparagam, in Telugu kanaka pushyaragam, and North Indian jewellers say pukhraj or guru ratna. All of them mean the same gem.
The English word "topaz" causes most of the confusion. Older books translated pushparaga as topaz, and many shops still do. Topaz is a different, softer and far cheaper mineral. When an astrologer says pukhraj today, they mean yellow sapphire.
Why Pukhraj Belongs to Jupiter
Jyotish assigns one gem to each of the nine planets. The navaratna verse in the Jataka Parijata gives ruby to the Sun, pearl to the Moon, and pushparaga to Jupiter, the teacher of the gods.
In a chart Jupiter stands for knowledge, teachers, children, dharma and the judgement that keeps wealth once you have earned it. In a woman's chart it also describes the husband. So a pukhraj comes up in readings about studies, a delayed marriage, children, or a career in teaching, law, finance and advisory work.
The stone carries Jupiter's themes into your life, good and bad. That single fact decides who should wear it, and I come back to it in the lagna table below.
Pukhraj Stone Benefits
These are the benefits tradition attaches to a pukhraj that suits the wearer's chart. I state them as tradition, because nobody has measured them.
- Clearer judgement. Jupiter governs counsel, and people wear the stone to steady their thinking when a big decision is in front of them.
- Support in studies and teaching. Students, researchers and teachers wear it during long courses and exams.
- Marriage matters. Families ask for it when a daughter's marriage is delayed and Jupiter is weak in her chart.
- Children. Jupiter is the karaka of children, so couples are often advised to wear it. Please read the limits section before acting on this one.
- Money that stays. Jupiter relates to savings and sound advice more than sudden gain.
- Standing and goodwill. Advisors, lawyers and people in public roles wear it for reputation.
- Spiritual practice. Many wear it to stay regular with mantra, study and charity.
A stone works, in the traditional view, by strengthening a planet. If Jupiter is already strong and well placed in your chart, you gain little by adding to it.
Benefits People Claim vs What to Expect
Sellers stretch these benefits a long way. This table sets the sales line beside my own advice.
| What you are told | What tradition says | My advice |
|---|---|---|
| "Marriage within months" | Supports a weak Jupiter in marriage matters | No stone fixes a date. Keep meeting families and keep the search active. |
| "Guaranteed child" | Jupiter is the karaka of children | See a fertility specialist first. The stone can sit beside treatment as an act of faith. |
| "Money will pour in" | Linked with savings and good counsel | Expect steadier decisions at most. Income still comes from your work. |
| "Cures liver and stomach trouble" | Old texts connect Jupiter with the liver and fat | A gem treats no illness. Your doctor does. |
| "Suits everybody" | Depends on Jupiter's lordship for your lagna | For four lagnas I usually advise against it. |
| "Bigger stone, bigger result" | No classical text fixes a weight | A clean 5 ratti stone beats a cloudy 8 ratti one. |
Pukhraj Stone Ke Fayde (हिंदी में)
Who Should Wear Pukhraj: Lagna by Lagna
Jupiter owns two houses in every chart, and which two depends on your lagna (ascendant). This table gives the usual first reading. Placement, aspects and the running dasha can change it, so treat it as the starting point for a reading.
| Lagna | Houses Jupiter rules | Usual view on pukhraj |
|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | 9th and 12th | Often suggested, as lord of fortune |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | 8th and 11th | Usually avoided |
| Mithun (Gemini) | 7th and 10th | Only after a careful reading |
| Kark (Cancer) | 6th and 9th | Often suggested |
| Simha (Leo) | 5th and 8th | Often suggested, as 5th lord |
| Kanya (Virgo) | 4th and 7th | Only after a careful reading |
| Tula (Libra) | 3rd and 6th | Usually avoided |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | 2nd and 5th | Often suggested |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | 1st and 4th | Suggested, as lagna lord |
| Makar (Capricorn) | 3rd and 12th | Usually avoided |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | 2nd and 11th | Astrologers disagree; I am cautious |
| Meen (Pisces) | 1st and 10th | Suggested, as lagna lord |
Use your lagna here, and leave your rashi or sun sign aside. If you do not know your lagna, you need your birth time and place to find it. Our guide on which gemstone to wear from your kundli explains the method, and a kundali analysis gives you the answer for your own chart.
One more rule: avoid pairing pukhraj with diamond or with neelam (blue sapphire). Jupiter and Venus are traditional opponents, and most astrologers keep Jupiter's and Saturn's stones apart too.
Signs That Pukhraj Does Not Suit You
Gemstones are not harmless ornaments in the traditional view. If Jupiter rules difficult houses for you, strengthening it strengthens those houses.
The ill effects tradition lists for a mismatched pukhraj are restlessness, new quarrels at home, careless spending, and weight gain with laziness. I pass these on as belief, without proof. Ordinary life can cause every one of them, and a doctor should look at any change in your health.
My advice is plain. Wear the stone for a trial of a few weeks. If life feels heavier, take the ring off and have your chart read again. Money already spent is a bad reason to keep wearing a stone.
How to Check an Original Pukhraj at Home
"Pukhraj stone how to check original" is one of the most searched questions about this gem, and you deserve a straight answer. At home you can catch crude fakes. You cannot confirm a natural stone.
With a 10x jeweller's loupe and a white light, look for these:
- Round bubbles or swirls. Bubbles point to glass. Natural sapphire shows fine needles, feathers and fingerprint-like marks.
- A flawless interior at a low price. Clean natural stones exist and cost a great deal. A spotless bargain is usually synthetic or glass.
- Colour that sits in cracks. Yellow gathered along fractures suggests dye or filling.
- Straight bands of colour. Natural sapphire often shows straight, angular colour zoning. Even colour alone proves nothing either way.
- Worn facet edges. Sapphire holds sharp edges for years. Rounded, scuffed edges on a new stone suggest something softer, such as citrine or glass.
- Surprising lightness. Sapphire is dense. A citrine of the same size weighs noticeably less on a carat scale.
Each of these can rule a stone out. None can rule one in, because lab-grown sapphire is real corundum and passes all six.
Home Tests That Prove Nothing
You will find confident videos on each of these. I do not rely on any of them.
- The milk test. The claim is that a real pukhraj left in milk turns it yellow. A sapphire gives off no colour. If the milk changes, suspect dye.
- The turmeric rub. Rubbing haldi on the stone and watching for a red stain tests nothing about corundum.
- The sunlight ray test. Any faceted transparent stone throws light on white paper, glass included.
- The scratch test. Sapphire scratches glass, and so do topaz and quartz. You also risk chipping a stone you have paid for.
- The warmth test. Holding a stone to feel whether it stays cool separates nothing a buyer needs separated.
The Lab Report Settles It
A gem laboratory measures refractive index and specific gravity and studies the inclusions under a microscope. Those three checks separate natural sapphire from topaz, citrine, glass and lab-grown stone. Nothing you can do in a kitchen does the same job.
Ask for a report from an independent lab such as GIA, IGI or the Gem Testing Laboratory in Jaipur, and read four lines on it: the identification (natural corundum, yellow sapphire), the carat weight, the treatment comment, and the report number. Where the lab offers an online lookup, check the number yourself. A card printed by the seller's own shop is a receipt and nothing more.
I have covered treatments such as heating and glass filling, and what each does to value, in the article on how many ratti of pukhraj to wear.
Buying Pukhraj Stone Online
An online pukhraj stone purchase can be as safe as a shop visit if the seller answers these before you pay:
- Is the photo or video of the exact stone? Catalogue pictures tell you nothing about the piece that arrives.
- What is the weight in carats? Ratti conversions differ between sellers. Carats do not.
- Which lab issued the report, and what is its number? Verify it before paying.
- Is the stone heated or treated? You want the answer in writing.
- What is the return window? A fair seller gives you time to have the stone tested independently.
- Is the price for the loose stone or the finished ring? Gold and making charges change the total.
- Will you get a proper invoice? It should describe the stone as natural yellow sapphire.
Our own yellow sapphire pukhraj is listed as a certified stone. Ask us for the report and a video of the exact piece before you order, and we will send them. You can see it beside the other navaratna in our gemstone collection.
Pukhraj at Tanishq and Jewellery Brands
Many readers search for the online pukhraj stone price at Tanishq. Large jewellery brands sell yellow sapphire mainly as finished jewellery, and they price a piece on its design, gold weight and diamonds along with the centre stone. A branded ring and a loose astrological stone are two separate products, so their prices do not compare line for line.
I do not quote another company's prices, because they change and only its own website or store can confirm them. If you buy from a brand, ask the same questions as anywhere else: carat weight, treatment, and an independent lab report for the sapphire itself. For astrological use, also ask whether the setting leaves the back of the stone open.
Pukhraj Stone Price
No single pukhraj stone price exists. Sellers price sapphire per carat, and the per-carat rate climbs with colour, clarity, origin, size and the absence of treatment. Two stones of equal weight can sit far apart in price for good reasons.
I keep figures out of articles because they go stale. The pukhraj price guide shows how a total is worked out from carat weight and grade, and the live figure for our stone is on the listing in the gemstone category. Treat a "natural, unheated, 7 ratti" stone at a throwaway price as a warning.
Substitutes When Pukhraj Is Out of Budget
Tradition allows an upratna, a substitute stone, when the main gem is out of reach. For Jupiter the common choices are citrine (sold as sunehla) and yellow topaz. Both are natural gems in their own right and cost a fraction of sapphire.
Astrologers regard a substitute as milder, so they often suggest a larger weight. Sold under its own name, a sunehla is an honest purchase. The trouble starts only when a shop sells it as pukhraj. If the names confuse you, the piece on gemstones versus crystals sorts out the vocabulary.
Non-gem remedies for Jupiter also exist: Thursday fasting, the Guru mantra, and giving to teachers and students. I often suggest these first when the budget is tight.
Wearing and Looking After the Stone
The usual method is a gold ring on the index finger of the working hand, first worn on a Thursday morning in shukla paksha after chanting "Om Brim Brihaspataye Namah" 108 times. The ratti article linked above covers weight in detail.
Sapphire is tough, yet it still needs care:
- Wash the ring in lukewarm water with mild soap and a soft brush once a month. Soap film and hand cream dull a stone quickly.
- Take it off for the gym, heavy lifting and bleach or pool chlorine. The gold suffers before the stone does.
- Store it apart from other jewellery. A sapphire scratches softer gems, and a diamond scratches a sapphire.
- Have a jeweller check the prongs once a year. Most lost stones fall out of loose settings.
- Keep glass-filled stones away from ultrasonic cleaners and heat.
Some families replace a stone after a fixed number of years. I know of no classical rule for this. Replace a pukhraj if it cracks or chips badly; otherwise a sound stone can stay.
What Pukhraj Cannot Do
A pukhraj is a traditional remedy for one planet. It cannot guarantee a marriage, a child, a promotion or money, and a heavier or costlier stone guarantees no more than a modest one.
It is also no treatment. For jaundice, liver trouble, infertility, low mood or any other health concern, see a doctor first. A gemstone can remain part of your faith alongside medical care. It must never delay that care.
And it cannot replace effort. If the stone suits your chart, it supports the work you put in. The work is still yours.
