Pukhraj Price in India: How Per Ratti and Per Carat Rates Work

How pukhraj price is worked out for 5, 6, 7 and 7.5 ratti: per ratti vs per carat, the five price tiers, ring costs, online checks and pukhraj vs panna.

11 October 2026 14 min read|By Nidhi Shrimali

⚡ Quick Answer — Nidhi Shrimali

Pukhraj price in India is quoted per carat or per ratti, and the rate itself changes with the stone. Treatment, colour, clarity, origin and size decide it, so two 7 ratti yellow sapphires can differ many times over. To compare quotes, convert both to carats, match the treatment written on the lab report, and check a live listing for today's figure.

Why There Is No Single Pukhraj Price

Gold has a daily rate because one gram of 24 carat gold is the same as any other gram. Pukhraj has no such rate. Every yellow sapphire is a separate crystal with its own colour, its own inclusions and its own history of treatment, and each of those changes what it is worth.

That is why a "pukhraj price list" you find online is only ever one seller's stock on one day. It is also why I do not print rupee figures in this article. They would be out of date within weeks, and a wrong number in your head is worse than no number. What stays true is the method, and once you know it you can judge any quote in a few minutes.

Price Per Ratti vs Price Per Carat

Indian jewellers have traditionally quoted pukhraj per ratti. Gem laboratories and most online sellers quote per carat. Both describe the same stone, but the numbers are different, and mixing them up is the most common way buyers misread a quote.

In the convention most of the market follows, one ratti is about 0.91 carat. So a per-carat rate is roughly 10 percent higher than the per-ratti rate for the same stone. If one shop quotes per ratti and another per carat, the per-carat quote will look dearer even when the two stones cost exactly the same.

Not every seller uses the same ratio, which I have explained in detail in the guide to how many ratti of pukhraj to wear. The safe habit is simple. Ignore the ratti figure when you compare prices and use the carat weight printed on the lab report.

5, 6, 7 and 7.5 Ratti in Carats

This table converts the weights people ask about most. The figures use the 0.91 convention and are rounded, so treat them as approximate and check the certificate.

Weight asked forApprox. caratsWhat to know when pricing it
5 ratti4.55 ctThe most commonly stocked weight, so you get the widest choice of quality
5.25 ratti4.78 ctPriced like 5 ratti at most shops; chosen for the "sava" custom
6 ratti5.46 ctSome families avoid exactly 6, so stock can be thinner
6.25 ratti5.69 ctThe usual alternative to 6 ratti
7 ratti6.37 ctOften crosses into a higher per-carat bracket
7.25 ratti6.60 ctSame bracket as 7 ratti
7.5 ratti6.83 ctClean stones at this size are noticeably scarcer

How the Total Is Worked Out

The arithmetic is short: rate multiplied by weight. A stone quoted at a certain rate per carat and weighing 4.55 carats costs that rate times 4.55.

What surprises people is that the rate is not fixed across sizes. Sellers price in weight brackets. A clean five-carat crystal is harder to find than a clean two-carat one, so the per-carat rate goes up as the stone gets bigger. This is why "pukhraj price 7 ratti" is usually more than 7/5 of "pukhraj price 5 ratti" for the same quality. You pay for more carats, and each carat also costs more.

So when a seller gives you a per-ratti rate over the phone, ask which weight that rate applies to. A rate quoted for a 3 ratti stone tells you little about a 7 ratti one.

The Five Price Tiers of Pukhraj

Almost every yellow sapphire in the Indian market falls into one of five groups. The gap between the groups is far wider than the gap inside any one of them, so the first job is to find out which group a stone belongs to.

TierWhat it isRelative priceHow you confirm it
1Glass-filled or diffusion-coloured sapphireLowestLab report mentions filling, residue or diffusion
2Heated stone, commonly sold as Bangkok pukhrajLow to moderateReport says "indications of heating"
3Heated Ceylon stone with good colourModerateHeating noted; origin stated only on fuller reports
4Unheated Ceylon stone with visible inclusionsHighReport says "no indications of heating"
5Unheated, eye-clean, well-coloured stoneHighest, and it climbs steeply with sizeReport from a recognised lab, ideally with origin

The trade names are loose. "Bangkok" usually tells you the stone was heated, not where it was mined. "Ceylon" means Sri Lanka. Only a lab can state origin, and many basic reports do not give one at all.

A heated stone is still a natural sapphire. Many astrologers accept heated stones for remedial wear and many insist on unheated. Whichever view your astrologer holds, the point for pricing is that you should pay a tier 2 price for a tier 2 stone.

Colour, Clarity and Cut

Inside a tier, three things move the rate.

  • Colour. An even, medium, lemon to golden yellow is valued most. Very pale stones cost less. So do stones with a brown or green tint, and stones where the colour sits in patches.
  • Clarity. Hold the stone a hand's length from your eye. If you can see cracks, black specks or a milky cloud, the price should reflect it. Fine needle-like inclusions seen only under a lens are normal in natural sapphire and are part of how a lab recognises one.
  • Cut. A good cut returns light evenly across the face. A stone cut deep and heavy at the bottom carries extra weight you pay for and cannot see. A stone cut too shallow shows a washed-out "window" in the centre.

Of the three, clarity is where budget stones are most often oversold. "Natural, 7 ratti, low price" nearly always means a stone you can see through poorly.

Should You Stretch to 7 Ratti?

If your budget is fixed, you are choosing between weight and quality. My own advice is steady on this: a clean, well-coloured 5 ratti stone is a better buy than a cloudy 7 ratti stone at the same price. The traditional texts that describe gem flaws treat a cracked or dull stone as unfit to wear, and none of them say a heavier flawed stone makes up for it.

Three ratti is the floor most astrologers work with for an adult. Between 5 and 7.5 ratti the choice is mostly about what you can afford in good quality. If someone tells you that only 7.25 ratti will "work" and the stone they have happens to be exactly that weight, treat it as a sales line.

Stone Price vs Ring Price

The figure on a listing is often for the loose stone. A finished ring adds four more lines to the bill:

  • Metal. Gold is traditional for pukhraj, and the gold in a man's ring can cost as much as a mid-tier stone. Panchdhatu or silver brings the total down sharply.
  • Making charges. These vary by jeweller and design.
  • Lab certificate. Sometimes included, sometimes charged separately.
  • GST. Applied on the invoice. Ask for a proper bill that lists the stone and the metal as separate items.

When two sellers quote different totals for "a 5 ratti pukhraj ring", the difference is often in the metal weight and has little to do with the stone. Ask for the break-up.

Pukhraj at Tanishq and Other Branded Jewellers

Many people search for "pukhraj price 7 ratti Tanishq" hoping a big brand will have a standard rate. I cannot quote any jeweller's prices, and they change, so the brand's own store or website is the only place to get them. What I can tell you is how to read what you are shown.

Branded jewellers mainly sell finished jewellery. The tag price covers the gold, the making and the stone together, and the stone may be chosen for how it looks in the design, with no thought for astrological wear. Before comparing with a loose-stone seller, ask four things: the carat weight of the stone alone, whether it is heated, which laboratory issued the report, and whether the back of the setting is open. If the staff cannot answer the second question, you do not yet know what you are paying for.

Kolkata, Jaipur, Delhi: Does the City Matter?

There is no separate "pukhraj price in Kolkata" in the way there is a city gold rate. A certified stone of a given quality costs roughly the same wherever it is sold, because the same wholesale trade supplies every city. Jaipur is the country's main cutting and trading centre for coloured stones, which is why so much stock passes through Rajasthan.

What does change from city to city is the shop: rent, margins, and how much of the range is certified. A small-town shop may offer one or two stones and no lab report. A large city market offers more choice and also more glass-filled stock. The certificate matters more than the pin code.

Comparing Pukhraj Prices Online

Buying online gives you the widest choice and the easiest comparison, as long as you compare like with like. Open two listings side by side and check:

  1. Carat weight, not ratti.
  2. The treatment line. "Natural" on its own is not an answer; heated stones are natural too.
  3. The name of the lab and a report number you can verify on the lab's website.
  4. Photos or video of the actual stone, not a stock image.
  5. A written return policy that lets you get the stone checked independently.

Only when all five match are the two prices comparable. You can see how we list weight, treatment and certification on each stone in our gemstone collection, including the yellow sapphire (pukhraj) page, which always shows the current price.

Pukhraj vs Panna Price

People who have been advised both stones often ask which costs more. Neither is always dearer. Both are priced per carat, and both have a very wide range.

The difference is in what drives the rate. Pukhraj is usually a fairly clean stone, so the price turns mostly on heating. Panna (emerald) is almost never clean. Nearly every emerald has visible inclusions and has been oiled to improve its look, so its price turns on how clear it is, how strong the green is, and how much oil or resin was used. A clean, vivid emerald of 5 carats is rarer than a clean yellow sapphire of the same size and will usually cost more. At the everyday astrological grade, the two are often in a similar band, and a heated pukhraj can cost less than a decent panna.

Do not choose between them on price. They belong to different planets, Jupiter and Mercury, and whether either suits you is a chart question. The guide on which gemstone you should wear explains how that is decided.

When a Price Is Too Low

A large "natural unheated pukhraj" offered far below what other certified stones cost is one of four things: glass-filled sapphire, a synthetic, a different mineral, or a stone with a certificate from a lab nobody can trace. Yellow topaz and citrine are the usual substitutes. They are honest stones when sold under their own names, and I have compared them with sapphire in the piece on gemstones and crystals. Sold as pukhraj, they are a fraud.

If your budget is small, it is better to buy a smaller certified pukhraj, or an honestly labelled substitute, than a big stone with a story.

Seven Checks Before You Pay

  1. Has an astrologer checked Jupiter in your chart? A stone you should not wear is expensive at any price.
  2. Is the weight given in carats?
  3. Does the report state heated or unheated in plain words?
  4. Can you verify the report number with the lab?
  5. Is the price for the loose stone or the finished ring?
  6. Is there a bill with GST and a written return window?
  7. Have you compared at least two certified stones of the same tier?

What a Higher Price Does Not Buy

A costlier pukhraj is a rarer stone. It is not a stronger remedy. No classical text ties the result of a gemstone to what was paid for it, and nobody can honestly promise that a more expensive stone will bring marriage, a job, a child or money sooner.

Pukhraj is a traditional support for Jupiter, worn with faith and after a chart reading. It does not replace medical treatment, sound financial decisions or effort. Do not borrow money to buy one. If a seller or astrologer pushes you towards a price that strains your household, step back.
