⚡ Quick Answer — Does Horoscope Matching by Name Work?

Horoscope matching for marriage by name takes the first syllable of each name, maps it to a nakshatra and rashi, and runs the usual 36-point guna milan on those. Tradition allows it only when birth details are unknown. It can be useful as a first look, but it cannot check Manglik dosha, the seventh house or dasha. Matching by date of birth is far more reliable.

How Matching by Name Works

Every nakshatra is divided into four quarters, called padas, and each pada carries a sound. Ashwini's four padas, for example, are Chu, Che, Cho and La. Families who name a child by nakshatra pick a name beginning with the sound of the child's birth pada. That custom is where matching by name comes from. If the name was chosen from the nakshatra, the name points back to it.

A name-based match runs in three steps:

  1. Take the first syllable of each person's name as it is spoken, ideally as written in Devanagari or the family's own script.
  2. Look up that syllable in the nakshatra-sound table, called the Avakahada chakra, to get a nakshatra, a pada and therefore a rashi.
  3. Run ashtakoot guna milan on the two nakshatras exactly as you would with a birth chart.

The scoring itself is no different. What changes is how the two nakshatras were found. With a birth chart they are calculated from where the Moon actually was. With a name they are inferred from a sound.

From Name to Nakshatra: Examples

Here are a few common name beginnings and where the standard table places them. The last two rows show where the method gets uncertain.

Example nameFirst soundNakshatra (pada)Rashi
Amitअ (A)Krittika (1)Mesh (Aries)
Kavitaका (Ka)Mrigashira (3)Mithun (Gemini)
Manishमा (Ma)Magha (1)Simha (Leo)
Rahulरा (Ra)Chitra (3)Tula (Libra)
Sanjayस (Sa)Shatabhisha (2)Kumbh (Aquarius)
Tarunता or टा (Ta)Swati (4) or Purva Phalguni (2)Tula or Simha
Deepakदी or डी (Di)Purva Bhadrapada (4) or Ashlesha (1)Meen or Kark

Notice that Tarun and Deepak each land in two possible signs depending on which "T" or "D" sound is meant. That leads to the method's biggest weakness.

The Spelling Problem

The nakshatra table separates sounds that English spelling merges. Hindi has a dental ta (त) and a retroflex ṭa (ट), a dental da (द) and a retroflex ḍa (ड). Written in English, both become "Ta" or "Da", and they belong to different nakshatras, sometimes in different signs. The same issue affects short and long vowels, so "Di" and "Dee" may or may not be the same sound.

A few more problems are common:

  • Names not chosen by nakshatra. If a name was picked for its meaning, after a grandparent or because the parents liked it, the syllable has no link to the actual birth nakshatra. The match then compares two arbitrary nakshatras.
  • Which name to use. Many people have a formal name, a pet name and sometimes a separate rashi name given at birth. Tradition prefers the name a person is called by, but families disagree.
  • Sounds missing from the table. Some modern name beginnings such as "Shr" or "Tr" do not appear directly, so different tools assign them differently.

So two websites can give the same couple different scores by name, and neither is necessarily wrong.

What a Name Match Can and Cannot Check

All eight kootas of guna milan are derived from the two Moon nakshatras and signs. So, in principle, a name match can produce a full 36-point score covering Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi. Our guide to what the 36 gunas measure explains each one.

What a name cannot give you is everything that depends on the birth chart:

  • Manglik dosha. It depends on where Mars sits from the Lagna, Moon and Venus, which needs the date and time. Our article on Manglik dosha in marriage explains why this check matters.
  • The seventh house and its lord, the house of marriage itself.
  • Venus and Jupiter, the significators of marriage for the man and woman in traditional reading.
  • The Navamsa (D-9), the divisional chart read specifically for marriage.
  • Dasha timing, the periods the two people will move through together.
  • Dosha cancellations, many of which depend on full chart positions.

A name match is a score with nothing underneath it. That is why the tradition treats it as a fallback.

By Name vs by Date of Birth

Horoscope matching for marriage by date of birth uses the actual date, time and place of both people. From those it calculates the true Moon nakshatra, then builds both full charts. The guna milan score is more trustworthy because the nakshatras are real, and everything listed above can also be checked.

Even the date alone, without a time, usually gives the Moon sign correctly and often the nakshatra, since the Moon changes nakshatra roughly once a day. That makes a date-only match more reliable than a name match. Adding the exact time brings in the Lagna, houses and Manglik status.

If you have birth details for both people, use them. If you have them for one person only, a careful astrologer can still read that chart fully and treat the other person's name-derived nakshatra as a rough guide, saying so plainly.

Matching by Rasi and Nakshatra

Many families, especially in the South, already know each person's rasi and nakshatra from the birth record or the temple. "Horoscope matching with rasi and nakshatra" means entering those directly rather than calculating them.

This is as good as the record it comes from. If the nakshatra was calculated at birth from the actual time, a match using it gives the same guna or porutham result as a date-of-birth match. It still skips the chart-level checks, so it answers "do the stars agree?" but not "does the marriage house support this?"

South Indian Matching: The Ten Poruthams

In Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, matching commonly uses the porutham system rather than the 36-point ashtakoot score. Searches for horoscope matching in Tamil or Telugu usually mean this method. It is also based on the two birth nakshatras, so it can be run from names too, with the same caveats.

The usual ten poruthams are:

  • Dina — day-to-day harmony and health
  • Gana — temperament (deva, manushya, rakshasa)
  • Mahendra — prosperity and children
  • Stree Deergha — the wife's wellbeing and long-term support
  • Yoni — physical compatibility
  • Rasi — the relationship between the two Moon signs
  • Rasi Adhipathi — friendship between the lords of the two Moon signs
  • Vasya — mutual attraction
  • Rajju — the bond and the husband's longevity in traditional reading
  • Vedha — mutually afflicting nakshatra pairs

Each porutham is marked as agreeing or not, rather than scored in points. Regional lists vary slightly, and some families add Nadi. Rajju and Vedha are usually treated as the most serious. Many families will not proceed if Rajju fails, whatever the others show. As with guna milan, there are recognised exceptions, and an experienced astrologer looks at the charts before treating a failed porutham as final.

The two systems share several factors under different names (Yoni, Gana, Vasya/Vashya, Rasi/Bhakoot), so a couple who pass one often do reasonably on the other. They are not identical, though. Use the system your family and the other family both follow, so that nobody is surprised later.

Using Free Online Matching Tools

Free horoscope matching tools are everywhere, from panchang sites such as Drik Panchang to astrology apps. Most offer three entry modes: by date of birth, by name, and sometimes by rasi and nakshatra directly. Some also offer the porutham system alongside ashtakoot. A free online tool can calculate a score accurately. It cannot interpret it.

To use one sensibly:

  • Choose "by date of birth" whenever you have the details. Use "by name" only if you do not.
  • If you must use names, try both spellings of an ambiguous sound and see whether the result changes. If it does, the name method cannot settle the question.
  • Check which system the tool uses. Do not compare an ashtakoot score with a porutham count.
  • Treat a low score as a reason to look closer, not a verdict. Our article on how accurate online kundli matching is covers what calculators miss.

When Matching by Name Is Reasonable

There are honest uses for it. When one or both people have no record of their birth, a name match is the traditional fallback, and it is better than nothing as a starting point. It is also a reasonable quick look before families decide whether to exchange full horoscopes. And if the names really were chosen from the birth nakshatra by a family priest, a name match will often agree with a date-of-birth match.

It is not reasonable to accept or reject a marriage on a name match alone. Nor should anyone treat a name-based score as a prediction. No matching method, by name or by chart, can promise a happy marriage. Compatibility in a chart describes tendencies. The two people decide what they do with them.

After the Score

Whatever method produced the number, the useful next step is the same: build both charts from real birth details where possible, then read them together. That means the seventh house and its lord, Venus and Jupiter, the Navamsa, Manglik status with its cancellations, and the dasha periods both people are entering. A full kundli milan does this. A name match cannot.

If neither person knows their birth time, say so. An astrologer can still work from the date and the Moon chart, and is honest about what is uncertain. If you want to learn how a single chart is read first, start with how to read your own kundli.

Get Both Charts Matched Properly

A name gives you a score. Two charts read together give you reasons. If a proposal is serious, have the match done from birth details, with Manglik, Nadi, Bhakoot and the seventh house checked for both people.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does horoscope matching for marriage by name work?+
The first syllable of each person's name is looked up in the Avakahada chakra, the table that assigns a sound to each quarter of every nakshatra. That gives each person a nakshatra and rashi, and the usual 36-point guna milan is run on them. The scoring is identical to a birth-chart match; only the way the nakshatras are found differs.
Is matching by name as accurate as matching by date of birth?+
No. A date-of-birth match uses the real position of the Moon, while a name match infers it from a sound. If the name was not chosen from the birth nakshatra, the result compares two arbitrary nakshatras. A date-of-birth match with time also allows Manglik dosha, the seventh house, Navamsa and dasha to be checked, which a name match cannot do.
Which name should be used for kundli matching by name?+
Tradition generally prefers the name a person is commonly called by. Many people also have a separate rashi name given at birth from their nakshatra; if that exists, it is usually the better choice because it was derived from the actual birth star. Write the name in Devanagari or the family's script if possible, since English spelling hides sound differences.
Why do two websites give different name matching scores?+
English spelling merges sounds that the nakshatra table keeps separate, such as dental ta and retroflex ta, or dental da and retroflex da. Tools also handle modern name beginnings like Shr or Tr differently. Different tools can therefore assign different nakshatras to the same name. If the result changes with spelling, the name method cannot settle the question.
What is porutham matching in Tamil and Telugu horoscopes?+
It is the South Indian system, usually with ten poruthams: Dina, Gana, Mahendra, Stree Deergha, Yoni, Rasi, Rasi Adhipathi, Vasya, Rajju and Vedha. Each is marked as agreeing or not rather than scored out of 36. Rajju and Vedha are usually treated as the most serious, and many families require Rajju to agree.
Can matching by name detect Manglik dosha?+
No. Manglik dosha depends on where Mars sits from the Lagna, Moon and Venus in the birth chart, which needs the date, time and place of birth. A name only gives a nakshatra, so a name-based match cannot say whether either person is Manglik or whether a cancellation applies.
Can a good matching score guarantee a happy marriage?+
No method can guarantee that, whether by name, by date of birth, ashtakoot or porutham. Matching describes tendencies and areas that may need care. A high score does not ensure harmony and a low one is not a verdict. A full reading of both charts gives better reasons, and the two people decide the rest.
