⚡ Quick Answer — Nidhi Shrimali
Blue sapphire (neelam) in India is priced per carat, and no single rate exists. Whether it has been heated decides the price more than anything else. After that come colour, clarity, origin and size. An unheated, clean stone with an even blue costs many times more than a heated one that looks similar. Glass-filled and lab-grown stones cost the least. Compare stones only after reading their lab reports.

Why Blue Sapphire Has No Single Price
Gold has a published rate because one gram of 24 karat gold is the same as any other. No two sapphires are the same. Two stones of identical weight can differ in price by a factor of ten or more, and a seller who quotes "neelam ka rate" without seeing a particular stone is quoting a number for a stone that does not exist.
The price is built from a few facts about one stone: what was done to it, how blue and clean it is, where it came from and how heavy it is. I have left out rupee figures because they date within months. Our certified gemstone collection shows current prices against each stone's weight and lab report.
One aside, since the search turns up often: if you were looking for the price of a blue sapphire bottle at a liquor shop, that is a gin brand that shares the name. It has nothing to do with the gemstone.
Per Carat, Per Ratti and Per Gram
Sellers in India use three units for neelam, and the same stone can sound cheap or costly depending on which one is used.
- Per carat. The international unit and the one on every lab report. One carat is 0.2 gram.
- Per ratti. The unit astrologers prescribe in. By common market convention one ratti is about 0.91 carat, but some sellers use other values, so ask which one they mean.
- Per gram. A gram is five carats. Cut neelam is almost never sold by the gram. Per-gram rates belong to rough sapphire from the gem gravels of Sri Lanka or Madagascar, and to beads and low-grade lots.
Divide any per-gram rate for a faceted stone by five to get the per-carat rate, then ask why it is sold by weight at all. Convert every quote to carats before comparing; the gemstone price guide has a full conversion table.
Colour: The Shade You Are Paying For
With blue sapphire, colour moves the price more than anything else apart from treatment. The trade looks at three things: hue (how pure the blue is), tone (how light or dark) and saturation (how strong).
- Velvety medium blue with strong saturation is the most valued. Dealers use names like royal blue and cornflower blue for these shades. The names are not standardised, and a label on an invoice is not a grade.
- Very dark, inky blue that looks almost black indoors is priced well below a medium blue of the same size.
- Pale or greyish blue also sells for less, though bright light Ceylon stones stay in demand.
- A green or violet tint lowers the rate, green more than violet.
- Colour zoning visible from the top lowers the price.
Check the stone in daylight before agreeing a price. A stone that looks rich under shop lamps can go dark at home.
Heated or Unheated: The Biggest Price Gap
Most blue sapphires on the market have been heated. Heating improves colour and dissolves some of the fine needle-like inclusions called silk. It is an old, stable and widely accepted treatment, and a heated stone is still a natural sapphire.
The gap comes from rarity. A stone mined with good colour and never heated is far scarcer, so it costs much more than a heated stone that looks the same, often several times more at the fine end.
Only a laboratory can say which you have. Look for wording such as "no indication of heating" or "indications of heating"; phrasing varies by lab. If the report is silent on treatment, do not pay an unheated price.
For jyotish I prefer an unheated stone where the budget allows, but a heated natural sapphire is acceptable. What matters most is natural corundum with an honest report.
Diffused, Glass-Filled and Lab-Grown Stones
Below heated sapphire sit three kinds of stone that look like neelam but are priced at a fraction of it.
- Surface-diffused sapphire. A pale stone is heated with chemicals that add blue to a thin outer layer, which gathers along facet edges and can be polished away.
- Glass-filled (composite) sapphire. Cracked low-grade corundum filled with lead glass. It looks clean but is fragile, and a jeweller's torch can damage it.
- Lab-grown sapphire. Made in a factory, chemically the same as natural sapphire, and cheap. It is a fair choice for jewellery if it is sold under that name. In traditional jyotish it is not used as neelam.
None of these is illegal to sell. Selling one under a natural-stone price is the fraud. That is why the report matters more than the seller's description.
Blue Sapphire Price Tiers: Table
This table ranks the main kinds of blue stone you will be offered, from the most expensive to the least. The positions are relative, so the table stays accurate when market rates change.
| Tier | What it is | Relative price | Used as neelam in jyotish? | What the report should say |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Unheated, fine colour, premium origin | Highest; rare at any size | Yes | Natural sapphire, no indication of heating, origin opinion |
| 2 | Unheated, good colour, clean | Very high | Yes | Natural sapphire, no indication of heating |
| 3 | Heated, fine colour, eye-clean | High | Yes | Natural sapphire, indications of heating |
| 4 | Heated, commercial colour or visible inclusions | Moderate | Yes, if clean of cracks | Natural sapphire, indications of heating |
| 5 | Surface-diffused | Low | Usually avoided | Diffusion treatment disclosed |
| 6 | Glass-filled composite | Very low | No | Glass or lead-glass filling disclosed |
| 7 | Lab-grown sapphire | Very low | No | Synthetic or laboratory-grown corundum |
| — | Iolite, blue spinel, tanzanite, glass | Varies; not sapphire | Not as neelam | The stone's own name |
Tiers can overlap. A heated stone with exceptional colour can cost more than a dull unheated one. Use the table to work out which tier a quote belongs to, then compare only stones from the same tier.
How Origin Moves the Price
Origin is a premium added on top of quality, and it only counts when a laboratory states it. A seller's word does not count.
Kashmir commands the highest premium, since its historic mines produced briefly and old stones rarely surface. Burma comes next. Ceylon carries a steady premium in India because astrologers have long named it and many Ceylon stones are bright and clean. Madagascar stones often sit a little below comparable Ceylon material, and darker stones from Thailand, Australia and parts of Africa sit lower.
A modestly priced "Kashmir" or "Burma" stone with no lab origin opinion should be priced as an ordinary sapphire. In jyotish, origin does not change what the stone is: any clean natural blue sapphire is neelam. The blue sapphire ring guide describes how stones from each source look.
Clarity, Silk and the Hidden Weight in the Cut
Blue sapphire is not expected to be flawless. Fine silk and small crystals are normal, and the trade standard is "eye-clean": nothing distracting when you look at the stone from the top at normal distance. Eye-clean stones command a clear premium. Visible cracks or feathers reaching the surface bring the price down sharply. Most astrologers also reject such stones for wear.
The cut affects price in a way buyers often miss. Sapphire rough is valuable, so many stones are cut to keep weight, not to look their best. The result is a deep, bulging underside (the pavilion) that adds carats you cannot see from the top. You end up paying per carat for weight hidden under the stone.
Ask for length and width in millimetres along with carat weight, and compare face-up size. Also look for a pale "window" in the centre, where poor cutting lets light leak straight through.
Size Brackets and the Per-Carat Jump
A larger sapphire costs more for every carat, not just in total. Dealers price in weight brackets, and the per-carat rate steps up as a stone crosses common marks such as one, two, three and five carats. A clean five-carat stone of fine colour is much rarer than a two-carat stone of the same quality, so its rate per carat is higher.
A stone just under a line, say 2.9 carats, can be a better buy than one at 3.05 carats: they look alike, but the lighter one may sit in the lower bracket. For astrology this works in your favour. Neelam is traditionally worn at a moderate weight set from the chart, and a smaller clean stone is preferred over a larger flawed one.
What "Original" Should Mean on a Price Tag
People search for "blue sapphire price original" because they suspect, rightly, that much of what is sold as neelam is not. "Original" should mean three things together:
- The stone is natural corundum, variety sapphire, and not glass, iolite or a lab-grown stone.
- Any treatment is stated in writing.
- Both facts appear on a report from an independent laboratory, with a number you can check on the lab's own website.
A shop's own printed card is not a lab report. A BIS hallmark on the ring covers the silver or gold, not the stone. A very low price on a large, vivid, "natural unheated" stone is the most reliable warning sign there is.
Home tests can raise doubts but cannot prove a stone is natural. The checks worth doing are listed in the guide to identifying a real blue sapphire.
Blue Sapphire Ring Price
A ring price has three parts: stone, metal and making charge. In a silver or panchdhatu neelam ring the stone is nearly everything. In a gold or platinum ring with side diamonds, the setting adds a lot and can hide a weak centre stone. Ask for an invoice listing the stone's weight and report number apart from the metal. Buying the loose stone first also lets you finish the traditional trial before paying for a setting.
Blue Sapphire Price in Thailand
Thailand matters to sapphire prices for two reasons. Eastern Thailand, around Chanthaburi, is one of the world's main trading and heat-treatment centres. Rough from Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Africa and elsewhere passes through it. Thailand has also mined its own sapphire, mostly darker stones.
Trade prices can be competitive for dealers who know the material. Tourists are another matter: Bangkok has long-running schemes that steer visitors to shops selling stones at inflated prices. A stone bought abroad needs the same independent report, and if you bring one back, declare it and check Indian customs rules first. With duty counted, a certified stone bought in India often works out about the same.
Blue Sapphire vs Diamond Price
Which is costlier depends entirely on quality. A commercial heated sapphire costs far less per carat than a diamond of decent grade. A top unheated sapphire can cost more per carat than many diamonds.
The bigger difference is how each is priced. Diamonds are graded on a standard scale of colour, clarity, cut and carat, and the trade uses reference price lists. Sapphires have no such standard; dealers price each stone by eye, so a sapphire quote needs more questions from you.
In jyotish the two belong to different planets. Diamond is for Venus and neelam is for Saturn. Venus and Saturn are treated as friends, so the two are sometimes set together, but each must suit your own chart.
How Much to Spend on Neelam for Astrology
Start with the chart and work out the price after. Neelam is the stone tradition treats most cautiously. It is considered for some ascendants and avoided for others, and the reasoning is set out in the guide to who should and should not wear neelam. If neelam is not right for your chart, it does not help at any price.
Once a suitable chart and weight are confirmed, set a budget you can afford without strain. Within it, buy the cleanest natural stone with an honest report. If the main stone is out of reach, amethyst is the usual upratna for Saturn and costs much less, provided it is sold under its own name. Never borrow money to buy a gemstone.
For choosing among the nine stones in general, see which gemstone you should wear. Yellow sapphire is priced on similar principles, and the pukhraj price guide works through per-ratti totals in detail.
Eight Checks Before You Pay
- Weight stated in carats, with the ratti conversion the seller used.
- Length and width in millimetres, so you can judge face-up size.
- An independent lab report with a number you can verify online.
- The report says natural sapphire and states heating, diffusion or filling plainly.
- Origin claimed only if the report gives it.
- Colour checked in daylight, not only under the shop's lamps.
- No cracks reaching the surface, checked with a 10x loupe.
- A written return policy that covers the trial period.
What a Higher Price Does Not Buy
Price reflects rarity and demand. It says nothing about whether neelam suits you, and a costlier stone is not a stronger remedy. No blue sapphire, at any price, can guarantee a job, money, a legal result or an end to Sade Sati. Low mood, anxiety and poor sleep are often blamed on Saturn. If they persist, see a doctor first. A stone may be worn alongside treatment as a matter of faith, never in its place.
Neelam is also a poor investment for most buyers. Resale offers are well below retail, and only exceptional stones with top-tier reports hold value reliably. Buy it to wear, at a price you are comfortable with. If you are unsure whether Saturn's stone belongs in your chart, a kundali analysis answers that before you spend anything.
