Pukhraj Price in India: Per Ratti, Per Carat and What Decides It

Pukhraj price has no single rate. How yellow sapphire is priced per carat and per ratti, and what changes the cost of a 5, 6 or 7 ratti stone.

11 October 2026 13 min read|By Nidhi Shrimali

⚡ Quick Answer — Nidhi Shrimali

Pukhraj price in India has no single rate. Yellow sapphire is priced per carat, and the per-carat rate changes with colour, clarity, heat treatment, origin and size, so two 7 ratti stones can differ many times over. Convert ratti to carat first (one ratti is about 0.91 carat in the common market convention), then compare certified stones of the same grade.

Why There Is No Single Pukhraj Price

Gold has a daily rate because one gram of 24 carat gold is the same as any other gram. Pukhraj does not work that way. Every yellow sapphire is a separate crystal with its own colour, its own inclusions and its own history of treatment.

So a question like "what is the pukhraj price in India" has an honest answer only in this form: it depends on the grade, and the range between the lowest and highest grade is very wide. I do not quote rupee figures in articles, because they go out of date and because a figure without a grade attached misleads more than it helps. The live rate for a specific stone is on its listing.

What I can give you is the method. Once you know how the price is built, you can judge any quote you are given.

Price Per Ratti vs Price Per Carat

Laboratories and the international trade weigh gems in carats. One carat is 200 milligrams everywhere in the world. Indian shops often quote in ratti because that is the unit astrologers prescribe in.

The common market convention treats one ratti as about 0.91 carat. Some sellers use a slightly different ratio, which means a "per ratti" rate at one shop and a "per ratti" rate at another may not be describing the same weight. The carat weight printed on the lab certificate is the number to trust.

A per-ratti rate is simply the per-carat rate multiplied by about 0.91. If you are given one, you can find the other. Our post on how many ratti of pukhraj to wear has the full ratti, carat and gram table.

How to Work Out the Price of Any Stone

Use these four steps with any quote, in a shop or online.

  1. Ask for the carat weight. If only ratti is given, multiply by 0.91 for an approximate carat figure and confirm it against the certificate.
  2. Ask for the per-carat rate of that exact stone. A seller who can only give a lump sum is harder to compare.
  3. Multiply. Carat weight times per-carat rate is the stone price.
  4. Add what is not included: tax, the certificate if charged separately, and the ring or pendant.

Then compare that per-carat rate with other stones of the same treatment status and similar colour and clarity. Comparing a heated stone with an unheated one on price alone tells you nothing.

What Moves the Per-Carat Rate: Table

These are the factors a dealer looks at, in rough order of how much they change the rate.

FactorLower priceHigher priceHow to check
TreatmentHeated; much lower if diffused or glass-filledUnheated, no treatment foundTreatment line on the lab report
ClarityVisible inclusions, cracks, cloudinessClean to the eyeLook through the stone against white light
ColourVery pale, or brownish and greenish tintsEven, bright, medium yellowView in daylight, not only under shop lamps
SizeSmall stonesLarger stones cost more per carat, not just in totalCarat weight on the report
OriginUnstated or mixed sourcesSri Lanka (Ceylon) usually carries a premiumOrigin line, where the lab gives an opinion
CutWindowed, lopsided or too deepEven shape with good brillianceTilt the stone; look for a dead patch in the centre
CertificateNone, or an unknown in-house cardReport from an independent recognised labVerify the report number with the lab

Notice that weight is only one row. This is why the next three sections cannot give you a figure, only what to expect at each weight.

Pukhraj Price for 5 Ratti

Five ratti is about 4.55 carats. It is the weight most first-time buyers ask about, and it is where you have the widest choice. Dealers hold many stones around this size, so you can usually find a clean one without paying the premium that large stones attract.

If your astrologer has suggested 5 to 7 ratti and your budget is limited, 5 ratti (or 5.25, "sava paanch") is where the money goes furthest on quality.

Pukhraj Price for 6 Ratti

Six ratti is about 5.46 carats. On a like-for-like stone, expect the total to be more than six-fifths of the 5 ratti price, because the per-carat rate itself begins to climb as stones get larger.

Many North Indian families avoid exactly 6 ratti by custom and ask for 6.25. Because of that, sellers often stock 6.25 ratti stones in greater number. The price difference between 6 and 6.25 is small.

Pukhraj Price for 7 and 7.5 Ratti

Seven ratti is about 6.37 carats and 7.5 ratti about 6.83 carats. Clean yellow sapphire crystals above six carats are less common, so the per-carat rate rises again here. A 7.5 ratti stone of good grade can cost far more than the half-ratti difference suggests.

This is the weight where I see the most disappointment. A buyer sets a budget, insists on 7 ratti, and ends up with a cloudy or heavily treated stone because that is all the budget allows at that size. A cleaner 5 or 6 ratti stone is the better purchase. Traditional gem texts count cracks and dullness as flaws in a stone; they do not reward size for its own sake.

Pukhraj at Tanishq and Other Jewellery Brands

People often search for "pukhraj price 7 ratti Tanishq". I cannot speak for any brand's stock or rates, and you should ask the store directly. What I can explain is how a jewellery-brand price differs from a gem dealer's.

  • You are usually pricing a finished piece. The bill covers gold weight, making charges, the stone and tax together. The stone's share may not be shown as a per-carat rate.
  • Designs come first. Jewellery brands choose stones to suit a design. An astrological ring needs a specific weight, an open back and a natural stone of known treatment, which is a different brief.
  • Ask the same questions anywhere. Is it natural yellow sapphire? Is it heated? Which lab issued the report? What is the carat weight of the stone alone?

A known brand gives you confidence about the gold. For the stone, the lab report is what counts, whoever sells it.

Pukhraj Price in Kolkata and Other Gem Markets

Kolkata has an old gem trade and a strong culture of wearing stones, so buyers there have many dealers to choose from. Jaipur is known for cutting and trading coloured stones, and Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad have large markets too.

A big market gives you choice. It does not give you an automatic discount. The same graded stone costs roughly the same wherever it is sold, because dealers buy from the same supply. Where city prices differ, the reason is almost always a difference in grade or treatment that was not mentioned.

The rule is the same in every city: compare per-carat rates of certified stones with the same treatment status. A certified stone bought online from another city is a safer buy than an uncertified one from a shop down the road.

Pukhraj Online Price: Reading a Listing

Buying pukhraj online is common now and can work well. Read the listing for these points before you look at the price.

  • Species named plainly: natural yellow sapphire, or natural corundum. Not "yellow stone", "pukhraj quality" or "topaz".
  • Treatment stated: heated or unheated. Silence on treatment usually means heated, or worse.
  • Carat weight given, not only ratti.
  • Lab named, with a report you can see before paying.
  • Photos or video of the actual stone, not a stock image.
  • A return policy you have read.

You can ask us for the certificate details of any stone in our certified gemstone collection before ordering. The yellow sapphire pukhraj listing shows the current price.

Pukhraj vs Panna Price

Pukhraj is yellow sapphire, the stone of Jupiter. Panna is emerald, the stone of Mercury. They are different minerals and there is no fixed rule about which costs more.

Emeralds almost always have inclusions, and most are oiled to improve clarity. A clean, bright emerald of good size is rare, so at the top grades panna can cost more per carat than pukhraj. At everyday grades the two overlap, and an included panna often costs less than a clean pukhraj of the same weight.

Compare them only if your chart supports both. They are not interchangeable. If you are choosing between Jupiter's and Mercury's stone on price, the guide to choosing a gemstone from your kundli explains why the lagna decides, not the cost.

When the Price Is Too Low

A large "natural unheated Ceylon pukhraj" offered at a price far below every other quote is not a bargain. One of these is usually true:

  • It is citrine or yellow topaz, which are different and much cheaper minerals.
  • It is lab-grown sapphire.
  • It is natural sapphire that has been diffusion-treated or glass-filled.
  • It is natural and heated, sold as unheated.
  • The certificate is from the seller's own counter, not an independent lab.

Citrine and topaz are sold honestly as upratna, the lower-cost substitutes for Jupiter. There is nothing wrong with buying one knowingly. The harm is in paying a sapphire price for it.

Costs Beyond the Stone

When you compare quotes, check whether these are included:

  • The ring. Pukhraj is traditionally set in gold, and the gold and making charges can be a large part of the bill. Panchdhatu or silver costs less where gold is not practical.
  • Tax. Ask whether the quoted figure includes it.
  • The certificate. Some sellers charge for the lab report separately.
  • Shipping and insurance for online orders.

A lower stone price with everything else added on top can end up higher than an all-inclusive quote.

Buying on a Fixed Budget

If the budget is fixed, give up things in this order.

  1. Reduce the weight first. Go from 7 ratti to 5 or 5.25 before you compromise on anything else, as long as you stay at or above the weight your astrologer considers the minimum.
  2. Accept a disclosed heated stone before you accept a flawed one. Many astrologers accept heated natural sapphire; views differ, so ask yours.
  3. Accept a lighter colour before you accept cracks or cloudiness.
  4. Choose a simpler ring.

Never give up the natural identification or the independent certificate. And if even a small natural pukhraj is out of reach, an honest upratna is a better choice than a doubtful "pukhraj".

Before any of this, confirm that Jupiter's stone suits your chart at all. A kundali analysis costs far less than a wrong stone.

What a Higher Price Does Not Buy

A costlier pukhraj is rarer and better looking. It is not a stronger guarantee. No yellow sapphire at any price promises marriage, children, a job or money, and a heavier or dearer stone does not promise more of them.

Do not borrow to buy a gemstone. If a seller says a problem in your life will lift only when you buy a particular expensive stone, walk away. Pukhraj is also sometimes sold with claims about liver or stomach illness. For any health matter, see a doctor first; a gemstone can sit alongside treatment as part of your faith, never in place of it.

The blue sapphire guide makes the same point about Saturn's stone: suitability first, then quality, then size.
